POSSIBLE VENUES, DATES, AND COST'S FOR CONTEST IN SOCAL.

Post by Mike Fernandez »

Please don't enter ideas only, please find out the following info for the location you would like to have the contest at.
There are many good ideas out there, lets get a little more info.

Please enter:

AVAILABLE DATES AS OF NOW TO RESERVE YOUR LOCATION IDEA.

COST FOR THE SITE. IF BIDDING, ASK WHAT THE AVERAGE WINNING BID IS.

After we have a bunch of ideas, we can vote, then get a group of volunteers to make this happen.

Keep in mind all the things Mark, and Tom mentioned in the threads like a variety of eating, lodging, travelling services for the surfers and their families. Contestant parking at surf site, etc...
Remember, walking down the cliff at Blacks probably won't happen

Mike,
Oceanside will let you have a contest anytime and anywhere, as long as you pony up the $$$$$$$

Mike is on the right track. We need to move from sprouting off ideas (easy to do on this website) to ACTION (hard to do in the real world).

The following venues are readily available with 6-12 months notice:
HB
O-side
Salt Creek
Ponto
Many others I don't know about.

If someone wants to be the "Contest Director" and put together a team of friends to run a contest, I sure that Don, Jack Mark and myself will gladly provide technical advice and expertise. I can introduce you to Mary Lou Drummy who will obtain the permits, etc. for the venue and date selected.

I suspect that KSUSA funds may be available to support the event if you can present a credible team and focus to run the event. Again, I am speaking as a private person and not a rep of the KSUSA.

OK... I guess i`ll be the first one to step up. If someone wants to run a contest, i`ll help out how ever I can. I`m not a contest surfer, so I don`t know how a contest is surppose to go. I would rather be a guy behind the scenes..

Gumby- you are da man! I'll PM you with my cell # and we can talk about the next steps. I would recommend that you start by recruiting 3-4 other guys to help out. Looks like there are few takers already on board. we can provide you with checklists, etc to run the event.

Who can help Gumby?? Stand up and be counted!!

One other thing- putting together an event is really a rewarding and fun thing to do. Basically you are putting on a beach party for all your friends. I'm really stoked to hear that someone is willing to step up and take this on.

contest

Post by gene west »

why do we need a contest.?...how about a grand gathering of the tribes....Blacks, or maybe Sunset Cliffs (12 different reefs, from Pescador down to 33's), no permits, no hassels from any bureaucrats, and no ego's- the root's of kneeboarding is strictly underground, why main stream it, we know who we are.....just the meanderings of a cynical middle aged surf rat........send all hate mail directly to me, along with a new Flashpoint as a sign of your sincerity!!!!

A few comment on contests versus gathering- I love the gatherings and believe that they are really the essense of what kneeriding is all about. However, it just isn't feasible to have a gathering attended by 50-80 guys. The crowd alone would drive us crazy. Gatherings are great for 5-20 participants. Beyond that it gets a bit crazy out in the water.

A contest is a great way to have a large "Gathering of the tribes" that can remain coherent in the water. A contest creats a struture that can accomodate 50-100 participants in a way that everyone can have fun. Also, with the united power of many (meaning our combined $$), we can leverage ourselves into places like Steamers Lane, Pleasure Point, maybe Trestles or K38 or Big Rock or Blacks some day. Can you imagine a Gathering at Steamers Lane if 75 kneelos showed up!! It would be a disaster.

I beleive that we need both- many small group meetings or "gatherings" and a few large group meetings (contests) 1-2 times per year. That's the best of all worlds. In my perfect world, we would have a summer or fall contest in So Cal and a winter contest in NorCal.

For our first So Cal contest I think that O-side is a good call. HB or Salt Creek could work as well. I would be nice to go someplace with a few tubes and a bit of punch!

contests

That's hitting right on the money Tom. We can have a couple of contests here in So-Cal, and several gatherings whenever the surf gets good.
