Where: The event will be at the home of John and Kim Mel located at
212 Wavecrest Ave, Santa Cruz.

Here is link to Google maps

Their home is located at the north end of town on the Natural Bridges
side of Santa Cruz. They are just East of Highway one at Western and
Coast Highway.

Bratz with stone ground mustard and sauerkraut
Housemade chips with blue cheese and scallions

I am bummed I couldn't make it this year !

Super helpful seeing the 1st round in advance... many thanks Tom and Joe! (Jack too?)

Looking forward to the Mel's check-in. Only 1 keg, eh?

Edit: For those on there way early, conditions are best for exposed breaks. OBSF has nice conditions and shoulder-high +/- waves. Fat tide around mid-day, so early could be good.

If OBSF is not on the way, probably South of SC beachies will be similar.

Bummed I couldn't make it to the contest and the kick off at John's. Driving up Friday after work to watch on Saturday tho...should be interesting.

What happened today? Did the contest even get started. Didn't look like any waves at all on the cam the few times I checked while at work.

OK here is your unofficial report by the Nor Cal reporter, me. The waves were absolutely not responding to our needs, but gave us just enough to compete for tomorrow. Heats were completed in the knee high range for a knee boarder if you know what I mean. But all the usual suspects have moved on. The highlights were, Danny Robertson busting the beautiful nose off his Parkes and Gavin helping repair the mess to get him going again. Everyone enjoyed the weather and almost everyone enjoyed Ed Quinn's commentary. For the record Ed I loved it.
The swell is expected to increase by the afternoon. So another grueling morning of small swell madness until the afternoon. Stay tuned for the big swell report. Jon

What Jon Manss didn't mention was that some of the guys won their heat (or took second place) without getting the two waves to make up the combined scores. Their one wave was enough points to get them past some who actually got two waves, both smaller scores. Some guys got no waves in an entire heat, which was also rare--those were some long lulls. The guy on water patrol eventually paddled in and turned in his cool "Water Patrol" jersey--there just weren't any outside surfers were trying to horn in on the action!

But, as Jon also pointed out, the vibe was really pleasant. Everyone knows we just have to relax and do our best in the small stuff. And then the reward of really good waves to close the contest.
I'm not influenced by the past; I change it!

Thanks for the reportage, sounds like I would have been in paddling shape to catch some waves without getting caught inside.
