Kneeboard surfing Victoria held there first aggregate contest ever on sat 14th Feb 2009

We all rocked up To St Andrews Beach carpark at 8 am it was great to catch up with old friends and to make some new friends every one was in good spirits.

Gary finger had is gas bbq boiling water and providing coffee and tee for every one to get us all awake and fired up for the day.

Thanks Gary for your generosity.

The conditions were picture perfect, blue sky’s off shore winds and a 26 degree day the only thing missing for the day which is a rear occasion for the Mornington Peninsula was swell. We all got to the beach to be greeted by a 1.5 ft waves .A twice a yr occurrence for this part of Victoria, where generally we have to wait for swell to drop out.

We had surfers turn up from Torque the Melbourne metropolitan areas, Mornington peninsula and Phillip Island. There were 20 competitors as well as friends wives and children. And they were all super keen and pumped to surf no matter what the conditions. Which I think is an AWESOME winner’s attitude to have.

Jim Brown our club Pres and I decided to take the event to Moanna crt 500 mtrs from where we met up, there was a right hander peeling on a shallow bank offering some surfable waves but we had to hurry as we had to take advantage of the low tide which gave us 4 hrs of time to run the event before the tide got to full and turned the ocean in to a lake.

So all the club members got all the gear and we had the contest area set up with our first heat in the water within a half hour. This was great to see all members keen to set up and not bludge, “Thank you all for your help and effort”.

The waves were gutless and soft but the boys were going hard getting some awesome major critical turns in the soft mush especially by Tim Kadwell and Mike Disciassio “its actually amazing what the were doing for the quality of waves”. And I believe surfing gutless waves improves your surfing as you have to lurne to develop your own speed on the waves and no rely on the power of the waves to push you
.

We had the contest finished in 4 hours so Tim & Deb Kadwell opened up there house for our gathering. We all packed up our gear and headed there for our presentation and club committee elections..

A few of the lads came back via the bottle shop bringing back a few alcoholic beverages to share with the rest of us “Thanks Guys”. And Deb Kadwell the hostess with the mostest thankyou for the fruit platter and dips making us feel welcome in your home.

A great time was had by all with an awesome surfing display and a fantastic social gathering.. A special thankyou should go out to Deb Kadwell for sharing your house. Lyn Owen for making the colourd heat flags Jim and Rosey for there hard work and keeping the day running smoothly without any hiccups. To Neil Luke for making us a kneeboard to raffle to raise funds for our club.

The results for the day were

open 1st tim Kadwell 2nd Mike Discassio 3rd Mark Jefferys and 4th Neil Owen

B grade 1st James Anderson 2nd Tony Jewell 3rd Anthoney Taylor and 4thJim Brown
.

Remember Guys get your entries in for the State titles held at Phillip Island on 28/2/09 to 1/3/09.
Well that’s if from Me and I will see you at the state titles in 2 weeks.
Because there is nothing like that kneeling off the ceeling feeling.

Cheers

Thanks to all the crew that came along to our first club event last saturday. Small surf , but everyone there had a great time. Tim and Mick were the two standout surfers of the comp, but everyone else still had a blast.
Thanks to all the guys for helping with the judging and moving the gear. And thank you to all the guys who have taken on committee roles with the club.
See you all in a couple of weeks on the island.

Here is the report from our second comp at Phillip Island as told by “Red”

It's Two for Tim, Ten for the Team

The second Victorian Kneeboard club contest was a ripper. The conditions were perfect Victoria in autumn: sunny with a gentle offshore, air temperature a moderate 22 degrees and the ozone hole barely a sliver in the blue sky. Time to chat, discuss action in the water, sit in the judges chair a few heats, catch a brace of uncrowded waves in heats, and to spend the afternoon filling up on good company, well cooked barbie food and a few cold beverages. The drive home filled with gentle reminisces of waves caught, waves missed, hooting and hollering at moves seen and moves missed. Slipping off to sleep with the names of new friends, the excitement of being the host club for the next worlds, and the camaraderie of the day buzzing around. Can’t wait for the next one on the Peninsula in August.

So how did the day unfold? Well I arrived 15 minutes late to find the tent up and the incomparable team of Jim and Rosie and eager helpers in full control of things. “This lot don’t muck about. I’d better check my heat. OK, a few minutes to spare. Sorry, Jane, see you in a bit. Got to say hi to a whole bunch of blokes I haven’t seen in a while.” And so the day ran. “I’ll judge the next one. Hey, Lukey good to see you again. Mark, how’s that new board running?” Interspersed with “Heck, better get ready for my heat -nice to meet you, John / See you again Paul / and so on.” I’m sure it was like that for everyone on the day.

The parking lot at Woolamai was packed but everyone respected our peak and we had it to ourselves for the five hours it took us to run the contest. After first round the contest split into two. The second round for those that progressed and a separate event for those that went out the first round. There was a running joke about paddling out on the five minute flag, since the paddle was about 37 seconds, but the waves made up for it. They were consistent A-frame peaks that ran left and right. The rights yielded a couple of cutties, the occasional tube and opportunities for a few bashes before closing on the sand. The lefts were running a bit quick to yield many points, but they were still fun to ride. And fun was the order of the day. The judges could hear the hooting of the contestants as they cheered one another on (and the yelling when competition nerves proved too much for a couple of them).

Who had the most fun? That’s a difficult one to assess, but I saw a lot of smiling faces in the water, around the contest site and at the presso at Jim and Jill’s house (thanks, guys). Mark Foxy Foxman finally found form after a few shakey heats and walked away with the gold in the “alternative” division. He was followed by Jim Brown in a creditable second for a big man in small surf. Anthony Taylor traded his doctor’s prescription of 10 days in hospital and months without grog for third place and Graham Denereaz smiled into fourth.

James “Pommie” Anderson looked like a winner all day and Stan Koefoed surfed one of the heats of his life on the way to the semis. Tim “Chemical” Cadwell brought his usual giant killing smooth style to all his heats and Red got his head out of a couple of small tubes. In the semis Mark “Mygod” McCloud showed us a few of the tricks he’s learnt hanging out with the NSW and UK boys and Neil Luke demonstrated how a world champ surfs a home break, but they didn’t crack the nod from the judges. It ended up with Pommie, Stan, Tim and Red having a convivial 20 minutes of chatting, joking and surfing a waves in the final. Red, Pommie and Stan had had a few but Tim was looking in poor shape after blowing a couple. Then Tim picked up on his 9 point saviour that gave him the boost to find a back up and pull away from the pack. Tim first, winning a great looking watch from … Red took second in his first surf in 6 months and Stan and Pommie went to a 5 wave count back to split third and fourth respectively.

Highlight of the day was the raffle draw for a fantastic looking Island kneeboard made by Neil Luke. Members had been feeling her up all afternoon and commenting how smooth, lithe and shapely she was. Their were groans of despair and cheers of congratulations when Greg “Budgie” Budgen was nominated to take her home and introduce her to his wife.

Congratulations to Tim on his second club win and to the organisers, supporters and enthusiasts for a great day – ten out of ten for the team that made it happen!

Hi all Vicco kboarders, looking forward to catching up with you all at our 3rd contest for the yr ...

Looks like the swell is going to have some size which will give us some good choices to hold our contest. On Reefs as the beaches have been of poor quality of late.

If your a vic kneeboarder and would like to come down to the event and catch up with other like minded people we encourage and welcome you to join us at the beach ...You don't have to be a competitor and afterwords come back to Jim and Jills for the social gathering.

Next Comp Sunday 2nd August at Phillip Island, meet at Woolamai 2nd carpark at 7.30 am for an 8.00 start. Once again please let jim know earlier ( by Friday) if your going to compete so he can get the draw done.

Cant wait to catch up with you all

Stan

Good to here you got some good ones finger. Budgie and myself scored solid double overhead at Bells on Tuesday, with some fun ones at Cathedral Rock later in the avo. It was good to see other kneelos out at both Bells and the rock. Bet your crowd factor was better than ours. See you Sunday.
