Looks like there are waves! Nice 4-5ft peaks coming in today, the wind was on it a bit, but should have some juice for the contest. Warm water. 8)

Looks like there are two heats of four kneelo's in each. How sweet is that! Nice peaks, but the wind is on it a bit.
Hopefully someone will post up the results and see who's in the final Sunday.

I want to send out a special announcement:
Ed Quinn deserves a sportsmanship award for his selflessness in the second heat of the NSSA Californian Championships semi-final.
Ed started the heat with a solid ride to put him in first place, Evan followed up with a strong ride to put him in a close second. The heat wore on with Ed and the others picking up their second waves as Evan went into the last four minutes without a second ride. Then Ed split a peak with Evan giving him the better wave when he could have shut him out as Ed had position. Evan scored high wave of the heat to come within less than a point of unseating Ed from first place.

Not enough good words can be written about this kind of sportsmanship.
Never leave well enough alone.

Waves were contestable, thought each heat had a low, first heats longer that second. Contestants had to be diligent in grabbing at least 2 waves quickly.

A side note: the announcers were giving live scoring, so each contestant was advised as to their place and what wave score was needed to take over the lead. Not sure if the guys in the water could hear with the brisk on-shore wind but this kept everyone up on who was where. I thought this was a positive.

Here's what i jotted down, please correct it not right.
Semi One
1. Sean Noone
2. Lenord Miller
3. Chris Bermudez
4. Tom Fish

Semi Two
1 Ed Quinn
2. Evan Odom
3. Eric Peterson
4. Paul Devoy

Top 3 in each heat advance to Sunday's 12:20pm Final

Well, I'll be calling the grom next time I need some yard work or dog walking.

Truth is, Having scores announced during the heat is a game changer.

NSSA is really kicking ass on this event. Super professional. And like the ASP, they announce scores after every exchange. (We could hear them )

Allows you to know where you stand, where everyone else is, what you need, and surf accordingly.

If I had NOT KNOWN the score, I might have had to take the better Right on the peak Evan and I split. I wouldn't have known who was where and couldn't risk giving up the higher scoring potential. Since I knew I was in first and Evan was in last and top three advance I was able to give Evan the wave he needed (and ripped, BTW) and take the left.

I strongly suggest we consider this for future events.
It will improve sportsmanship, gamesmanship, and scoring confusion.

It was another beautiful Southern California day when the kneeboarders lined up on the beach to do battle in the 2013 NSSA West Coast Surfing Championships Sunday, May 19, in Huntington Beach, CA.
Four to five foot bumpy peaks greeted the kneeboarders for their 20 minute midday heat.
The contest started off with Eric Peterson and Evan Odom leading off with some nice rides on the waves, but as Ed Quinn finished his ride with a nice hit on a left, the announcer put Ed in the lead. As the contestants where changing waves, their placings were getting adjusted as well making for an exciting heat.
Chris Bermudez, Leonard Miller and Sean Noone were catching waves and making some nice turns, but the biggest were going to Eric and Ed.
Eric got a nice right and left set wave and made some nice cutbacks and off-the-lips to take a well deserved victory.
1st. Eric Peterson
2nd Ed Quinn
3rd Chris Bermudez
4th Sean Noone
5th Leonard Miller
6th Evan Odom
Congratulations to our 2013 NSSA West Coast Kneeboard Champions.
See you guys at the national championships next month. The trophies are huge!

Congrats to Eric Peterson. Eric did a great job of selecting the best waves and getting the most from them.
