Game day!
This is a good day for SoCal kneeboarding. It sound like there is still one open spot in each heat.

The first NSSA kneeboard contest went off very smoothly Tom Fish and some of the other contestants said Saturday, Aug 25, 2012. There were two prelim heats of five kneelos. Entered were: Ed Quinn, Tom Linn Trevor Linn, Chris Bermudez, Paul Devoy, Evan Odom, Tom Fish, Sean Noone, Leonard Miller and Eric Osland.
The winds were low, the sun was out, the water was a warm 70f and there were a lot of people on the beach.
The two 15 minute prelim heats had some waves at about 3-4ft faces, with some contestants getting nice rides for the mushy conditions.
Tom Fish had a nice set wave with a 360 spinner thrown in to set the tone. Leonard Miller had a beauty of a lip bash going left next to the pier. Tom Linn was hitting the lip throughout the contest and Sean Noone and Paul Devoy were getting some long rides.
The final 20 minute heat still had low winds, but the tide came up and the contestants were finding it difficult to connect a wave to the beach. The only people connecting to the inside were the tiny Menehune's.
Winner, Sean Noone found one and pulled off a nice lip bash on the inside to earn the win. Congratulations to all contestants for giving it a go. The next comp is Saturday, October 6th at 9th Street HB. Stand by for a fun video by Robb Masser (Tahiti Nui) coming out in a few days.

Best part of this contest was the vibe.

The NSSA has to be the best contest out there.

Zero drama. Zero attitude. Zero stress.

Event ran like clockwork (no horns, no PA announcements), everyone had a smile, and everyone was stoked.

Stuff like announcing heat results literally MINUETS after the heat ends. I hadn't even turned in my jersey before the results were read.

A super well oiled machine. Legends, Families, and sponsered rippers all enjoying a day at the beach.

And the best part... Everyone was SO stoked to see us.

All day long people were commenting how cool it was to have the Kneelo's back. Legends like PT and Peter Mel were hanging in our tent all afternoon swapping stories and laughing there a$$es off at Noone, Devo, Linn, and I talking smack before the final. (which was extra hilarious since the waves were so tiny).

PT especially loved the passion.

We were given great heat times, on and off the beach in under 4 hours, and totally respected.

Can't wait for the next one.

I always say that a contest is just an excuse to hang at the beach all day with your bros and go surfing. Yesterday was a perfect example of that. Really nice day, no wetsuits, waves were fun in the morning and midday, but sucked for the final. Best part was hanging with kneelos talking story for a few hours before our final. Prelims didn't start until noon so we slept in, arrived at 10 and were on our way home by 5.

Congrats to Sean Noone for the win.

I can backup what Ed Quinn said. I'm sitting under the tent with Sean Noone and Sean says, "so Mike, your a local here?" PT (Peter Townend, first world surfing champion) jumps in and says, "yeah, local yocal." :P How do I respond to that?   I just said I grew up here. :D PT has always supported kneeboarders. PT and Ian Cairns (Bronzed Aussies) sponsored me back in the day if you can believe that.

Mike, Good on ya for putting this together. It sounds like you all had fun and were well received. The K'Boarders have always been a core-element of the contest/surf scene.

Hey Mike, considering you were sponsored, any way you can score us one of those famed Bronzed Aussie jumpsuits the boys used to sport to the beach, parties and such? 8)

Thanks Mark. If I had one of those jumpsuits, I would be wearing it, or selling it on EBAY for $50k. You could ask PT though next time.
Sluce, the last kneelo heat started at noon.
