News Release

Post by Jack Beresford »

Huntington Beach, CA (Sunday, Jan. 21, 2013) – Jack Beresford of San Diego reclaimed the Open Championship at the 10th Annual KSUSA U.S. Titles today in Huntington Beach. The win earned Beresford his fourth KSUSA U.S. title.

Beresford was challenged in the Open Final with impressive surfing from former U.S. Champ Bill Lerner, first-time Open finalist Sam Coyne, and Huntington standout Pat Evans.

Sixty kneeboard surfers competed over two days and were treated to summer-like weather, chest-high peaks and Santa Ana conditions on the south side of Huntington Pier.

Chris Linn of Laguna Niguel claimed the Junior title and surfed into the semifinals of the Open. Surfing his first kneeboard contest, Tony Bartovich of Huntington Beach finished second in the Juniors and also made the quarter-finals of the main event. Rounding out the Juniors final was Shayne Dimick, Kai Jennsen and defending champ, Evan Odom.

Kathy Yturralde of Huntington Beach successfully defended her Women’s division title with an outstanding performance, including a nine-point double barrel that had the crowd on the beach cheering. Cynthia Wornham finished second, Jan Fadden was third and Linda Reuter finished fourth.

Mark Robertson and Steve Randall won the AAA and AA divisions respectively.

The event concluded with the Sandy’s Cup Challenge – a one-hour heat pitting teams of four in a tag-team format. “Blacks Crew Kneelos” a team stacked with three Open division finalists edged out the field to win the perpetual trophy – which is on display at Sandy’s Beach Grill.

Established in 2003, Kneeboard Surfing USA is dedicated to promoting the sport of Kneeboard Surfing through competitions, kneelo gatherings and other activities. For more information visit www.ksusa.org.

Post Event Wrap...

Media:
Posted all my better photos and videos of the Titles with the final highlight reel from the Sandy's Team event. (see the link below) Will let the real pro (Mike Fernandez) present his video coverage of the Awards presentation.

Great Job All:
With Jacks 'wrap up press release' above, that closes the door on the 2013 event. Like others I wanted to express congratulations to all the contestants, thanks to the friends and families who supported them, and the talented group of core ksusa board folks who started talking/planning in late July, each contributing a specialized skill-set working together to present the 10 Anniversary Titles/Festival.

Some Things To Think About:
Mike posted a comment about feeling “post event” let down. I guessing it's like when we were kids and waited so long for Christmas day, lived every minute of it, then woke up the next day with that 'what's next' feeling. Many of us won't see more than a few other kneelos together again for another year.
So plan a local gathering: update us on the forums and get the word out, a few hours of surf together and some quality time for a few tall tales and snacks does the sport good. Gives us great exposure, get's others interested in our community.

Think NSSA: 2014 tour starts in August I think, even if you don't complete come on out an support the folks who do, I encourage the Juniors and Gal's to enter too.

Praise, Thanks, Love:
ksusa is so fortune to have quality long-time supporting sponsors. Parks, Blast, Freeline, Flashpoint, Schoelkopf, and other board mfrs. have ponied up boards, on their dime. Take time to let these folks know how much the kneelo community appreciates their support. Shoot'em an email, order a board, buy a few shirts, whatever. These guys deserve our support too. Thanks to the new guys also, Balestar, Vartanian, McConnell and the latest NeePro. Thank You!

US Titles 2014 Location:
With Big Tony 'retiring', perhaps a venue change, I know the NorCal crew would like an event in their backyard, or seeing how many competitors drove up from San Diego, maybe these guys could pull off something. In the past ksusa has partnered with other tours, maybe hook up with one of them, two separate days for kneelo's only. Steamer Lane, Trestles, Central Coast? Ocean Beach?

Format Change:
Perhaps another day after the Titles for a group free surf, just watch the Team event and you'll understand the fun of dozens of riders, from different levels, all 'taking it up a notch' for fun.

Time To Put Your Skills To Use: GET INVOLVED
Think about volunteering with the board, most of us can contribute a bit of time/skills before and/or during the event. Simple things done by several folks gives everyone involved a chance to compete and enjoy the event.
You know the names of who to contact, shoot them message, let them know you can contribute a bit of time, a skill you do at work is way more fun when it for this cause. The more we can get involved the easier it is for everyone
