Wanted to thank Kathy Yturralde for the use of her photo from the 2013 event that served as the basis for the event design used on the posters, shirts and trophies. If you have one that you would like to have considered please let me know, working on a concept for next year already and would love to see what you submit.

Also, everybody knows somebody with a business or company, mention about the event and see if their interested in sponsoring/donating, it doesn't have to be anything major; it's never too early to get into their budget for next year. With basic event and permit costs rising each year every little bit helps to defer the cost and keep the contest affordable so everyone who wants to enter can.

Here is the video of the Open Final
Congratulations to everyone who made it to their Semi's and Finals - (more highlight reels to come)
...rm

Wow, thanks so much for recording and editing the Open Final. That was great to watch and see the challenge of surfing those waves well under pressure--big EQ with his large frame definitely had to work twice as hard to keep his board zipping and spinning across those waves. Congrats to Jack and Bill for really picking the best waves and surfing them hard!

2014 Impressions

Post by Jack Beresford »

Thanks everyone for the kind words! And congrats to Brad (AAA), Fred (AA), Evan (Juniors), Kathy (Women) and NorCal (Team) on your big wins as well. You are all deserving champions! I’m especially stoked for Brad – the nicest guy in kneeboarding. He’s really upped his game and earned this result!

Special thanks to Amanda and Joe who made the event such a success in spite of all the challenges! They are true unsung heroes of KSUSA. A shout out to Dante and the whole crew who worked the event and do such a superb job every year (my check’s in the mail). “Gracias” to the Kneelo Cove crew for welcoming us back every year with so much stoke – what an incredible sense of community you have! Lastly, a BIG shaka to Rockin Fig and Mike Butler who killed it on the microphone all weekend. They did an amazing job calling all the action and filling with hilarious stories and kneeboarding trivia!

Some favorite moments from the weekend:

Mini-Groms Rule! How cool was it seeing our three mini-groms charging those insiders with proud papas cheering them on? Perhaps our first view of a couple of future KSUSA Champs?

Welcome home Capt. Buscemi! It’s hard to believe Chris Buscemi was in Afghanistan just a couple months ago?! He was killing it in the surf just like always. So nice catching up with you and your lovely family. We all thank you for your service!!!

Ler showing us how it’s done! Did you see his barrel in the south area Friday morning? On a morning when most of us are scratching for any kind of wave, the guy finds this clean left and is throwing the peace sign as he comes out cleanly! That’s gotta be next year’s poster design!

Women on fire! Undoubtedly one of the best heats Saturday was the women’s final with Kathy, Cynthia, and Kiana going at it. The ladies put on an amazing display with barrel rides, floaters and big hacks. Respect!

Lastly, it was a privilege to surf the Open Final with such talented and nice guys as Pat, Ed, and Billy. No shortage of action and drama over those 30 minutes – everyone wanted the win. Bill was sitting a little deeper when that nice set came in – I yelled “Going left?” fully knowing he was about to get the wave of the day (including two perfect 10s). Thankfully there was a pretty good one behind it. What a blast to have such an exchange with the guy who has set the standard down at Blacks since I started kneeboarding in 1981. Big smiles all around as we paddled back out together. That’s what this event is all about!

Congratulation Jack - when I saw you with the new board down @ Black's, I had a feeling you would be zipping around on the waves and come home with a win! You'll need a larger trophy room soon!

And congratulations to Bill (I was rooting for you). Glad you had some waves to surf on - while you were surfing on Saturday I was snorkeling at La Jolla Cove - so I knew there couldn't be much surf! I got home checked the surf @ Huntington Beach live on Surfline and the first thing I saw was Ed Q going right, while someone was going left - I thought that can't be good...

Good job guys- Walt

A great contest indeed! The Kneelo Gods smiled upon us again with great weather and very clean surfable conditions.

It was so great to see everyone!

Congrats to all the competitors and winners. Jack again showing why he's tops.

A Big THANK YOU to Joe and Amanda Taylor!

The amount of work they did on the front end of the contest, during and at the evening festivities was monumental.

Let's all rally and chip in to keep this thing going. Every contribution from dollars donated to picking up a piece of trash on the beach helps.

Looking forward to the next one.

I don't know where to begin, other than saying whew...that was a great event, both in the water and at the evening festivities at Sandy's. The weather and waves were amazing. JT and I thank everyone for their recognition and appreciation of us for the work we did. Please understand, we were just very visible, as there are others who should be acknowledged as well.
During the months before the event, there is a planning committee who has conference calls, working out the details for the events. The committee consists of: Don Harris, President of KSUSA, Joe Coyne who deals with all things website and registration related, Jack Beresford who handles the press releases and is a great sounding board, Brad Colwell who handled the trophies and he too is a great resource, Ed Dimick who prepares the heat sheets then transfers the points, and Robb Masser who deals with the graphics on the poster and who took some great photos and video of the event.
Another big thank you goes to Dante Giuliano of Outdoor Event Specialists and his crew who helped make this event run flawlessly. Pineman, as beach marshall, kept everything running smoothly. Rockin Fig on the mic did a perfect job announcing the event, and made the awards ceremony memorable. Mike Butler's time on the mic added some great commentary as well.
I do need to throw a huge shout out to my husband, Joe Taylor. If it was not for his support, both emotional and physical, during this event, I honestly don't know if I would have been as calm and sane. Joe and I literally started planning this event after the close of the 2013 Titles, well over a year ago, reaching out to sponsors and planning this event. But that's what it takes: dedication, commitment and tireless hours for an event like this. And, giving up the better portion of our garage and daughter's bedroom to house all the items and supplies.
Congratulations to all the division winners. Some of the heats were very close, separated by less than half of one point. I would know. I was the tabulator for this event. A new skill learned for me. Yeah. And boy, was it tough walking off the beach with the names of those who won!
Aside from the planning committee, this event would not be possible without the gracious support of our sponsors. Sandy's, who hosted our three nights of festival deserves a huge amount of thanks. Next time you're in HB, stop in, have a drink or meal, and say thanks.
On your way up PCH, stop in and say hi to TK and the guys at Froghouse. They have been especially generous to KSUSA in the past few years and seriously deserve to be recognized.
Our board sponsors this year were Freeline (John and Kim Mel), Parkes and new for this year, Mark Sweeney of SD. I know the guys that were the highest bidder and took these boards home are beyond stoked. Can't wait to see them in the water on their new sticks.
We had a variety of sponsors, from those within the kneeboarding community, to those who are personal friends who believed in supporting KSUSA and the stoke of kneeboarding. Do take a moment to reach out and say thank you to those who gave to KSUSA raffle mania and auction: AquaTech Waterjet, Blast Hawaii, Board Raxx, Bolsa Clothing (Mike Butler), Bryan Hefland, Cove Pad Guy (Casey Patelski), Costal Charters (Benny Flortino), Dangerclose Prducts (Jeff Wallis), Disordery Images (Carl Ellery), Michael Fernandez Photography, Fred and Sons Metal (Big Fred), Hi Times, Hilton Waterfront, Wade Travis Jackson, Kai Shots (Amanda Taylor), Kona Red juice, KneeloNation (Tom Fish), Larry Block Products, Legless.tv (Steen Barnes), , Midnight Products, Muir Skate Longboard Factory, Casey Parlette, Pretty Noise Skate Lab Factory (Doug Owens), Ron Romanosky photography, RVCA, S.S. Metal Fabricators, Bill Sharp, Smith Optics (via Danny Robertson), Stay Covered, Stonefish Skegs (Randy Stockstill), Surf Tours Nicaragua, Surfari Charters, Surfline, SurfTrophy.com (Dave Reynolds), Viper Surf Fins.
We had several guys who donated gently used boards for our raffle-in-a-box opportunity raffle. They included Joe and Sam Coyne, Don Harris, Eric Peterson, Fred Peterson, Craig Russel and Joe Taylor and an anonymous donor.
If you were lucky to have your name drawn for a raffle item, or were the highest bidder on a live auction item, please reach out to the donor and say thanks. These are the people who make this event happen. Because without them, this event would not be possible.

Thanks all for attending the 2014 KSUSA US Titles & Festival.
Let the planning for 2015 begin.

Another great finals video, Robb. Congrats to Brad and those finalists! Robb, you're becoming the best at telling the story of the contest with your visuals, including the award ceremonies--thanks for all your effort!

How quickly we forget the challenging conditions the 64+ competitors had on the first day of the event, especially the later heats as the tide dropped, resulting in a combination of skill and luck to keep yourself advancing for a chance to surf on day two in the quarter/semifinals. Hats off to all the competitors from day one.

Here is a look back at some of the day one highlights

Yup... My hat's off to those guys that can take grovelling surf and make it look good. But is that what it's really about?

Ok. I'm going to be the first to fire off the big guns: It's been a couple of years now and we haven't had a good show for a long time. Come on! Am I right? You guys have done your best but we haven't been lucky enough to score decent competition waves in years. I'm talkin' head high plus to double over head primo conditions.

I skipped SoCal again just because I knew it would be weak. I love you guys but come on! That's not our best. That's not what we're all about.

(I was pulling into Green Ball slots in Bali just before the comp and there's a head high plus+ swell running in PR right now. I've got a spare room and I'll put up anyone who wants to jump on a plane (for at least a night or two, as long as I can stand your @$$.) (6' 0" Blast, 6' 2" epoxy, 6' 2" Light, 6' 4" Parkes on loan.)

I think Jack would have won even without the spinners. On another note, I was voted "most sexiest man on the beach" again this year and I can't even do spinners. We need some women judges.

Oop. I forgot the boogies, the long boards and the really ancient SUP... Come on down!

I have to agree with you on Jack winning with or without the spinners. Being that 360's aren't scored all that high and the fact he beat a guy who scored a 9.7 on one of his keepers says he surfed pretty damn well. He rips.

As for you winning sexiest man on the beach, I had to head out before the votes were tallied, but I voted for you. You make a fine first impression. It was the jazz hands that did it for me, in case you were wondering.

The legend of the "jazzy hands!" My post was on the wrong thread, but thanks for the vote. I was told many women voted while I was in my heat. 8)
