In answer to your question (and IMHO): a resounding NO!

Good showmanship perhaps ("Look at me, Ma! Look at what I can do!"), but definitely not good surfing (unless you're into impressing others (e.g., judges)).

Hard bottom turns! Getting totally covered! Making insane drops and unmakeable sections! Now that's good surfing! :D 8) :o

But throwing spray, like 'getting air' for the sake of air, is just a trick, and as we all know, "Trix are for kids!"

I'm 31 and I love busting air for the sake of air. A 360 is a trick. An air is a move, a very difficult one at that.

I've always thought of throwing spray as a sign of power surfing and that is a good thing.

now does throwing more spray mean you're doing a "more" rail in the water turn?
Not necesarily, what it does mean is that you are putting more power into displacing water throughout your maneuvers.

i get great spray not from my rails but from my hands.you boys should check your HAND position.having arms straight out by the sides is a good start, then slowly leaning over till hand hits the water........SPRAY!!!

Throwing spray as a result of another more functional maneuver (e.g., bottom turn) is not the same thing as throwing spray just for the sake of throwing spray, which seems more akin to showing off (and which seemed to be what this thread was asking about).   :P

SPRAY-something male cats do.

Post by K-man »

After a 3 second thought on this subject, could it be that SPRAY is simply a byproduct of surfing? Is it possible to not produce spray? And if so is it the path to surfing enlightenment?AS if no spray equels-errrrr aaaaaa-a loss of ego.Dunno, too heavy for me.

Yes,I think hart hit the nail on the head in his post-Huh... :?:

I don't suppose many of you have tried peeing over your heads?

Definitely a case of "no spray needed" (except if I'm showing off).

But beware of the man with yellow dewdrops in his hair (sorry, it is a male thing), just like running over your mate in a "spray" miscalculation
