Info on upcoming USSF and KSUSA contests

Post by Tom Linn »

Seaside Gathering EC minutes 5/3/03:

Everyone agreed that the KSUSA website and the North Shore Gathering were hugh success. Big thanks to Don Harris and Bud McCray, respectively, for making these things happen.

1. The Central Coast gathering is on for the end of May hosted by Paul Duquet. Paul to coordinate with Don Harris re: details, getting the word out etc.

2. T-Shirts are available now. Cost is $30.00,which includes membership donation. Eric Osland will handle the shirt sales. Eric will produce and ship shirts, money goes to Paul Duquet. Eric sold several shirts at the Seaside Gathering with proceeds to be directed to Paul.

3. Newport gathering in June hosted by Danny Robertson will cancelled and dove tailed in with the August Huntington Beach gathering hosted by his brother Mark Robertson.

4. Contest update. Here is the breakdown of resposibilities for the upcoming contests(USSF contest in July and KSUSA contest in November).

A. Ed Quinn will handle the development of the application for the KSUSA
event.
B. Mark Robertson and Paul Devoy will spearhead obtaining merchandise for giveaways for both the contests. The goal is that every contestant receive merchandise. Bud McCray has offered to donate a Board and Pads for the KSUSA event.
C. Tom Linn will handle the contest format for the KSUSA event.
D. Tom Linn will handle communication with Paul West for the USSF
event in July.
E. Dave W will organize the apres-surf events for the USSF contest.
F. The KSUSA event will be 1 1/2 days of competition including apres surf events on Friday and Saturday evenings.
G. Don Harris will develop a committee of NorCal kneelos to work on the KSUSA contest. Focus will be apre-surf events, merchandise, various local community connections.
H. The KSUSA event will consist of an open event and a tiered event tied to contest experience. The goal is make sure that all contestants surf several heats.
I. Entry into the KSUSA event will be limited to a fixed number of entrants (most likely 4. Entry is first come, first serve.
J. Eric Osland will promote the KSUSA to Kneelos that are not internet enabled. He will use flyers and telephone contact primarily.
K. Tom Linn and Don Harris will communcate results of communication with USSF to KSUSA membership and promote USSF contest to the membership.

5. Don Harris to put "payment button" on KSUSA website so as to facilitate payment of voluntary dues.

6. Don Harris to work with Wetsand.com re: development of kneelo products online store. Wetsand.com may become a significant supporter of KSUSA. Part of proceeds from kneelo store to go to KSUSA.

7. Paul Duquest reported via e-mail as Treasurer. Bottom line, we have no money. About five people have paid volumtary dues.

Meeting was adjourned. Beer and pizza was enjoyed by all while Simon's video played on the big screen. Ed Quinn told the best lies of the day. Don and Tom described "Big Helen" to the crew. All agreed that Big Helen's dive bar in San Clemente was the place to be after a Trestles surf.

Here is a copy of recent correspondence with Paul West, director of the USSF-

Hi Paul,
Thanks for your input. Sounds like the 43th annual US Champs will be the best it has been in many years. I am sure that much of the improvement is as a result of your efforts. The assembly of radio stations, TV stations and expected crowds is pretty exciting.

Based on your e-mail we will proceed as follows:
1. Notify the KSUSA membership that entry to the US Champs is unlimited. Prelims could take place on the 28th or 29th if enough people enter. Otherwise most of our heats will take place on July 3rd.
2. Semi's and Finals will take place on the July 5th or 6th before big crowds and possible TV coverage. This is a great chance to showcase our sport.
3. We will borrow a tent from you to hang our banner and to serve as a central place for the kneelos to hang out. Thanks very much for offering to provide a tent.
4. We will notify you in advance and obtain your approval of any additional prizes or merchandise we would like to distribute to the finalists.
5. We will prepare our own entry form with the "special $50 fee available only to KSUSA members". The entry form will simply be a copy of your current form with minor changes to reflect the kneeboarding event and the reduced fee. The form will be mailed to the same location indicated on your current form. Thanks very much for the reduced fee. Hopefully this will enable us to generate a good turnout for the event.

Paul, we still need your confirmation as regards the fee. So let us know if the $50 fee is OK.

Thanks so much for your support of our group.............Tom Linn

Re: US Championships Information

Every KSUSA member will recieve via e-mail an entry form for the 43rd annual United States Surfing Championships hosted by the United States Surfing Federation on June 28th thru July 6th at Oceanside Pier, California. The surfing contest will be part of a major beach festival entitled “Oceanfest ‘03”(see oceanfest.com). The contest will enjoy extensive television and radio coverage and half a million people are expected to attend over the ten-day festival period.

At the urging of the KSUSA, the USSF has agreed to offer a fully sanctioned kneeboard event as part of the Untied States Surfing Championships. Pertinent information is as follows:

We Need Your Support!! We absolutely need to produce a good turnout at this event to create credibility for our sport. This event is a great opportunity to showcase our sport and to demonstrate how the sport has progressed. While we all agree that contests are not the reason why we surf, they do offer an outlet to display our creative energies and can be a fun supplement to our Gatherings. Last year’s US Champs was a great fun for everyone. Several kneelos who had rarely (or never) surfed in contests previously commented on what a good day it was regardless of their competitive results.

Your Entry Fee Includes: Entry in the United States Surfing Championships in which a Blast Kneeboard will be awarded to the US Champion and a Victory Wetsuit will be awarded to the runner-up. Also included at no extra charge is an US Champs T-shirt, a goody bag, raffle tickets for cool prizes, a good excuse to ditch work and hang out at the beach all day, a chance to surf with the kneelo bros and compare boards.

Cost: $50. The KSUSA successfully persuaded the USSF to reduce the fee from the $100 required of all other participants. The USSF has agreed to do this to help promote the sport of kneeriding in the USA. There will be an additional $50 payment due for the top eight contestants reaching the semi-finals. These top eight will be eligible for prizes that include a Blast Kneeboard and a Victory Wetsuit.

Dates: Preliminary heats will take place on July 3rd. Semi-finals and finals will take place on July 5th or 6th. Television coverage and large crowds are expected for the semi’s and finals. If we have a very large turnout some heats could take place on June 28th or 29th.

KSUSA meeting place: The USSF has graciously offered to provide a red/white and blue tent from which we can hang a KSUSA banner. This will be the central meeting point from which we can hang out, compare boards, sell KSUSA t-shirts, watch the heats and go surfing with our bros. We will hold a raffle for prizes offered by KSUSA sponsors and organize a “après-surf’ get-together (anybody up for swilling a few brews at Big Helen’s). A beach Bar-B-Q is a possibility as well.

Correction to my previous post:

All prelims and semi's will take place 6/28. Finals will be part of the major beach circus planned for 7/6.
