I wear fins. I enjoy wearing fins. I am a proud fin wearer
1. I've had shoulder problems since high school baseball and the fins take the paddling burden off my arms, to some extent.
2. I surf mostly shifty beachbreak waves and the fins get me in exactly the good take-off spot everytime. And the fins help a lot with the no paddle take-offs in these situations.
3. I don't get to surf as much as I did when I was single and childless and therefore not at the highest level of surf fitness. The kneeboard / fins combo allows me to take-off on and fully surf the most critical waves during a given session.
4. I'm pretty sure fins saved my life once.
5. When traveling, I use the fins for snorkling and body surfing, too.
6. I enjoy getting no respect. It really scratches the itch of my passive-aggressive nature
YMMV and I hate this centered text format.

Earlier in this thread people wondered why we call fins fins and not flippers. When we were kids they were sold as Swim Fins so we just called them fins.
One important advantage of fins, for me, is being able to kick while punching through or duck diving when it's bigger. To not get sucked back, as far, can help keep you out of the impact zone for the next one
For those who don't use them is it any disadvantage in this instance??
Innertube Water Polo, Intramural Champions-UCSF...the good old days

now - is there actually ANY way to kneeboard when its that size WITHOUT swim fins? the largest kneeboard is like what - 6'10"? (thats what phil curtis was riding in that shot at Mavs, AND he has fins on). can you even paddle in? i think thats my issue right now with bigger days. i'm riding a 6'0 (thick at 2 and 7/8ths) and i can paddle into most places around here, but at some point there is a limit right? unless i step up to like a gun sized board, pure paddling has a limit, right?
Gavin surfs Puerto Escondido that size and bigger without fins.
The boards that are OVER 7'0" are meant to be paddled without fins.
They paddle like any Gun.
Stand-ups are out on much smaller equipment, and they don't need them... so look your self in the mirror and ask yourself; "Why?"
I'd probably have short fins on, but I'm lazy... and they're great for swimming in after your leash and board are snapped.
However, you should also ask yourself, if I lose my board & my fins (Which has happened twice to The Creediler and I at Ocean Beach and Sharps Park), can I swim in? If not, you shouldn't be out there.
