A different surfing perspective?

I've started kneeboarding just recently. It's kinda been on my radar for a few years. Living around Cronulla I've always thought the ledgey reefs were well suited to a kneelo. Suppose it's the reason there's so many lids round Cronulla.

After I wrote something on Swellnet about kneelos, the photographer, Steen Barnes, offered me one of his kneeboards. I've taken it for a few hit outs and had a ball. It's easy to set the rail early, and also to make weight transitions back in the pit increasing barrel time. While not being a dissimilar approach to barrels as standing up, it's different enough to feel like something new.

Had my best session on it this morning; head-high plus barrels (if I was standing up!) cracking across a shallow bank. It was a semi-closeout and I was the only one out. Every wave was a pit and usually a traveller. F*cken unreal fun and I can't wait for the next session.

Great post; fun to hear his perspective. So true of kneeboards obvious strengths in ledgey, reefy waves.

The Chayne
The Simon

Well done once again Steen your pics are superb and some of the surfing the kneelos are doing is ok too

Man, that'd be crazy. Everyone knows there's no waves in Wollongong!

Come to the Gold Coast, hug a koala and surf with a few friends!

I can confirm both. No waves in the Gong and you can hug a koala on the Gold Coast.

yesterday with a dropping nth'ly wind swell, waiting for the s/w change to come through, walked down late arvo, high tide, off shore small but good shape, no one out just me and the dolphins came home with 3 good barrels and a heap of fun walls that i wouldn't have got if i lived a car trip away.
Swellnet/seabreeze predicted an afternoon s/w change, cause it was fairly late everyone missed it. On the spot gets the slot
once you've had black you'll never go back!!!

Someone's been keeping this quiet, maybe because it's not directly KB related, but a cool little photo-essay nonetheless.

There's a bottom turn shot in there that makes you sure the young feller learned "commitment" from his old man.

On topic:

Question:
Hi guys. Thanks for the great site untill now, boy, a lot of guys in Vic are
rooooly disapointed with the makeover. You used to deliver some interesting waves of the day with a good mix of adds and features with easey access to the cameras making it a goto site but just delivers a heap of features and lost it's user friendly. Are we still going to see Vic cams and if so can you tell me how and I will spread the “good” word. Hope we can stay with you

Response:

Thanks for the email and your feedback. Unfortunately, change is
inevitable.. the previous site was five years old, and we had to upgrade in
order to move the business forward.

Although the old site looked OK on the surface, there were major structural problems in the database that took hours and hours to attend to every day.
I've been fortunate enough to take Swellnet from its humble beginnings in my Adelaide bedroom, to a North Sydney office where we employ six full time staff and over sixty casuals around the country. That's a lot of wages to pay every month, so the new website was built with a primary goal of allowing the business to expand further. We're really happy with the result.

I am very confident that you'll get used to our new navigation structure
after a few weeks, and in a month or so it'll feel completely at home -
we've had great feedback so far.

And, there's no change to the content whatsoever - all we've done is change the layout a little. We'll be adding more Victorian surf reports and
surfcams over the coming months, along with a range of new online content that surfers have been requesting us to implement for the last four years.

Also, there's actually a really fast way to get straight to your report
(just one mouse click).. check out this post for more information.

Cheers, Ben

Red, I never knew you were behind Swellnet. Wow, that's great! Congratulations!
I'm not influenced by the past; I change it!
