Hey Skeg, welcome!
I find that I have two different locations on my board that I paddle from. Right in the center, if you will, for paddling out and around the lineup. But, as I paddle for a wave I lie a tad further back in order to hop up to the correct place on my board (i.e.not too far forward). If you're too far fwd you can't turn as easily and will feel, and look, like you're fighting it a bit.
It's a challenge in big surf where you really need to paddle to get in. Being farther fwd will help get in a bit earlier but may place you too far fwd. If so, just place hands on deck and scoot back when you can. The alternative is being farther back on the board for the paddle in, but you'll need to be a bit later on the drop (sit further in when you turn to catch the wave). Fun stuff!

Thanks for all the feedback, have been away from internet access and just catching up now. KenM - thanks for feedback on the wider board, have looked at link and am about to order one, looks like it will do the trick
Thanks again to all for the feedback - plenty to work on

Brad -
Thanks for that tip - I sometimes have that problem when popping up and had thought that paddling into the wave from further aft on the board might help - great to get verification from kneeboarders with much more time in the water.
I surfed stand up for many years, only adopted KBing a few years back and have had to adjust some of my habits to kneeboarding and fins
I pick up quite a few pointers on this site - not many KBs in my neck of the woods
Thanks!
Jimi
