Actually with the right equipment/software, and the fine tuning (check measurements) it works extremely well.
My issue ended up on the moral high ground.
Does the original shaper own the intellectual property that is in that shape?

difficult subject
during my work I have designed broadcast equip.
the company owns it
????
some of the designs I have used for myself and for other companies - WAY before I started work for said company
???
now I'm freelance
??
does my client own a design they commission me to develop ?
it's complicated

At first my answer was yes, which made me feel not so moralistic, but then I asked myself would a shaper make me a board if he knew I was going to copy it and start mass producing his shape (only hypothetically).Kev wrote: does my client own a design they commission me to develop ?

Then from a personal point of view you will always get the board you really liked each time, but that's like having toast and marmalade for breakfast every day you never step out into something different.
Bugger me it is complicated!!!!

My thoughts: why not ask the shaper who designed the original board how he feels about you having it scanned and reproduced on your own? If he thinks it's a good idea, then maybe it's okay. If he has reservations at all, don't have it copied. Give the guy the honor that is due for making a great original shape for you...
I'm not influenced by the past; I change it!
The question really is, "Can a scanned board duplicate the original?" At best it can be a close approximation - maybe better, maybe worse. There are a lot of variables beyond the blank's 3D shadow. As my mentor says: Shape to glass, glass to sand- a lot of things can change between a faithful scan and finished product.
