I'd say we just lost an extremely valuable member. To Flexman....
Thank you for the well thought out presention on this man who started me kneeboarding in the late 60's.
I saw the Innermost Limits of Pure Fun with my brother at Jacksonville Beach Womens club and never looked back.
I am a purist in the sence of the form of wave riding I choose, only kneeboarding.
Today, someone always paddles up to me in a line up and says,"hey...what is that you are riding", or...that thing sure does get really deep.
Thanks again.........

at this point its only speculation that flexman has bailed on us,because of this thread.
to be honest,if he's that easily upset because a few people voiced an opinion(and they are just opinions) that he didnt agree with, you have to wonder who has the narrow viewpoint.
i'd prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt, if anything his posts were totally relevant to kneeboarders.
i think Bruces original post was directed at someone like myself(see my recent shot of Tom Carroll ripping one of my local breaks).totally irrelevant and actually a photo of a guy, famously unfriendly to kneeboarders.you dont see me taking offence to it,chucking a tantrum, deleting posts and standing in the corner holding my breath.
i made an apology,as i could see the point.as have a couple of others.
i think everyone has been fairly careful with their wording during this thread.Bruce has labelled the thread Pandoras Box because it was only a matter of time before someone started slingingshit.
no need for it.the KKK reference in the title of your post is way over the top,its a friggen kneeboard websight
pardon my ignorance as i don't speak German.but i'm assuming that the phrase at the end of your post is linked to the title.if it isn't i'd be the first to apoligise.
but only a closed minded person would drag the German language through the mud because they're trying to make a point about bigotry
.
man i feel like a doofas for even reacting to this crap
people who take themselves seriously exist ,only to give every one else something to laugh at.

thanks for taking the rawness out of your post.
I appreciate it.
Of course, the dates might just be a coincidence
Though I had plenty to say on the subject, I too wasn't going to post on this thread - still, when I saw Flexman's 'passing', I felt it was best to say something.
It seems that, even those of us who stay silent, are just as guilty as those who choose to post.
cheers

BTW the meaning of the German has a certain quaint self reflexiveness once the translation is achieved. I chose German because it is the pope's native language. You see, in a way it is a subsititution for Latin - as you know, the traditional language of the motto. Nothing more, nothing less.

Mark,
good post. things have polarized and it's only a matter of time that the camps go their own ways. it's time the Lizard Society had a stronger and unified voice.

Guilty as charged.
Sorry it won't happen again.
OK.......... kneeboard surfing shots only from now on.........scouts honor.
It'd be a VERY GOOD IDEA to have a "Best Of" photos page.
(Hmmm, seems I suggested this a while back in another thread.)
We can have Don spend untold hours (he most likely doesnt have) editing all the images for the very best ones and post them to a seperate page.
When new visitors check the site out, they only get to see hot pics.
Sort of a "Putting our best Knee Forward" kinda thing.
The regular misc stuff and tom foolery shots could be accessed only via a "log in".
Hart (and everyone concerned),
You want good kneeboard surfing shots?
YOU CAN HELP
Here's a sure fire way to get good shots of kneeboarders.
1.
Buy a camera and telphoto lens and or water housing...........real good ones.
2.
Learn to use it well.
3.
Then go some place where some good kneeboarders are surfing. (It helps to go someplace with good waves.
)
4.
Spend about 10 years taking a lot of pictures of any kneeboard surfer you see..................a few thousand should get a few good shots. (Well with today's digital stuff a few hunderd might be enough.)
5.
Post only the best ones on this web site.
Or do your own website and post them there.
Well I wish it were that simple.
But truthfully it's much more difficult than it sounds.
Hardest part is finding the good kneeboarders, surfing good waves, at the same time that you are able to shoot.
Then when you do connect, there is usually a hoard of other surfers out and picking out just the kneeboarders is very difficult.
Then you have to politely ignore all the looky-loos who come up and badger you with requests to have a look through your rig and all manner of questions and chit chat, so you can concentrate on the job.
It truly is a JOB people, it's not always fun and glamerous.
To get incredible "timeless" shots you either have to be very lucky as in this recently posted gem............
album_showpage.php?pic_id=6456
Or......... spend a huge amount of time, energy and money.
This also means you give up surfing some of the best waves you've ever seen.
Here's a couple examples of what it cost and how much effort and risk it took to get them.

1rst shot is of Lee Pattison G-Land 1987.
My cost:
RT Air ticket to Bali Indonesia.
Around U$ 800 at the time.
Excess baggage fees $150 each way. This was for a camera bag with 5 small lenses and one real big one (17mm to 300mm + a 15 lb Canon 800mm F5.6L FD telephoto)
Tripod and 4 boards split between 2 board bags that were also stuffed with wetsuits flippers etc.)
All of this is pretty heavy. I dragged around it myself for the most part.
Stay in Bali 2 days to climatize and schedule the G-Land trip to co-inside with the right swell and tides, U$ 30 at the time all inclusive. (It was cheaper back then )
Trip to Bobby's camp. U$200 per week. We stayed 2.
Also included in this was it took me ages to convince Lee that G-Land was a better option than Puerto Escndito and to put away some of his money to go to G-Land with me. (Took him a year)
I also should include the 4 boards I built and gave him.
Oh yea, my camera gear cost me around $10,000.
Added to all this Lee had to pay for his share of the traveling costs.
So double that figure.
Risk was very high, due to just being in Indo was bound to get you sick from somethig, Bali Belly at least.........malaria very possible as well as snakes, scorpions, leopards, tigers, crazed babi rusa (kinda like a big boar), rabid monkies, sharks, stone fish getting slammed on the reef etc etc.
One afternoon a couple mates "Sloth" and Stu ? from Bondi, were following me back up to the Speed Reef launching pad. They were about 75 yards behind me. They told me later, at dinner that an (at least) 4 meter tiger shark was trailing me.
I caught a wide set wave before it got a chance to catch me.
We also nearly died (several times) on the road trip going to the camp and returning.
I stood in the blazing sun, roasting for hours while Lee attacked the place.
I also suffered his heckling.
He kept hassling me to, "dump the camera gear and JUST GO SURF!"
He thought I was a fool to shoot pictures while the surf was going off. (believe me, I did got my share
)
This shot cost even more and involved more risk.

Dave Schiller Lance's Right, Mentawai Islands early 90's.
Add to those costs (minus the G-Land stay) air fare U$150 to Padang Sumatra, ferry fare to Sikakap Pagai Islands and U$500 for my share of 2 weeks expenses on Dave's boat.
The boat wasn't a nice tour boat. It was a smelly , filthy little Indo fishing boat. He bought it but let the Captain and crew use it when he wasn't.
It was full of leaks and rats. The motor was out of whack and unreliable. You slept on deck and we had to boil water from the hold
if we wanted a drink. (There was plenty of warm beer and orange fanta though)
The whole trip was risky. The area was far more remote than todays fun filled boat tour frenzy.
We narrowly avoided being taxed / extorted and shut down by the local harbor master and survived a pretty intense storm at sea.
Also, back then, there was no one else around to assist you if you got into trouble or injured.
One of our ship mates came home with malaria and nearly died from it.
He thought it was just the flu.
(Sorry if I sound like the "tall poppy"
Prune at will.)
P.S.
I'll repeat this request.
Bruce,
You were good mates with P.C. weren't you?
You know his family....yes?
Try to get access to all the fantasic kneeboard shots that he took and have them scanned then share them with us.

Sorry it won't happen again.

IT WAS READING THAT STATEMENT THAT MADE ME DECIDE TO JOIN!BECAUSE THATS HOW I FEEL ABOUT THE SPORT AND THE PEOPLE IN IT.
IF I GOT ANY UNDIE'S IN A BUNDLE OR DIVIDED WITH JOKING ABOUT RGA/WRA, I'M SORRY, I WAS JUST WANTED TO MAKE ANY EXCUSE TO GET TOGETHER, BUT IF WE CAN'T KID ABOUT OURSELVES - THEN LEAVE IT UP TO OTHERS TO MAKE FUN OF US (WHATS WORSE). BESIDES REAL KNEEBOARDERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO TAKE IT BY NOW! I WANT TO BE A PART OF THIS NOT APART FROM IT AND WANT EVERYONE TO BE INCLUDED IN OUR KB "OHANA"

I'LL DO MY TURN ON EITHER SIDE OF THE PHOTO SHOOT JUST TO GET WAVES LIKE THOSE.

Gees guys - step back a bit and take a look at all of this.
I think if a fellow kneelo posted a pic up because he was:
1 - stoked with the quality of the pic that he took and wanted to share it
2 - wanted to show a pic of how good the surf was at his local break and he took a photo with a stand-up on it because they were the only other people in the water and a reference of size was needed
3 - or just wanted to share a pic of an awesome wave, or something of interest to other viewers
...then I'd respect his opinion and have a look and enjoy the stoke.
I always thought that was what kneeboarding was all about - sharing the stoke.
Kneeboarders, in my experience, don't give a crap about how cool they look or how much sponsorship they get - they're out there 'cause they're in love with the surfing and getting waves and the stoke of it all.
How many of you guys hoot and get a buzz out of watching ANY OTHER rider of different wave craft get a good tube?
Are we really that exclusive and elite that we want to ban things that aren't the same as us?
Diversity is what kneeboarding is about - how many shaping breakthroughs came about due to kneeboarders experimenting?
I haven't seen PC or Greeno ban stand-up pics or images.
....this has got to be the most disheartening threat I have read on this site...

Bud, good post..and you are 100% right in what you suggest/ propose

I like how you gentlemen are thinking

And what value would you place on that?
