fins/no fins

sometimes I go the standup and kneeride no fins route same session on a fish too. Came from standup background, wearing fins felt foreign at first. Now...
sometimes like strictly kicking into waves, no arm paddling at all.

Half-man indeed :!: Always felt it a compliment  Half-man,half board  Like a centaur... half man, half beast :!: But a board planes better than a beast

Actually, when EQ said this
-If you wear fins, you are part of the mainstream-conservative-close minded- lazy- change fearing- establishment.
I'm pretty sure he was being tongue-in-cheek, so I just decided to join the party. 8)

speaking of centaurs - did you guys see that story on Alex Rodriguez last week? A former girlfriend reported that he commissioned an artist to create not one, but TWO paintings of himself as a CENTAUR. That's half man, half horse. With himself as the dude. And he hung the big one in his bedroom, over the bed.

If there's any Yankee haters out there, I figured you might enjoy that :D :D

Speaking of Centaurs.

I believe that deal is already locked down by folks outside the kneeboarder community.

:P

I ride small mushy beachbreak with fins because I am old and out of shape and because they give extra push on takeoff for that first turn that sets up the wave. When it gets big and mushy and breaking halfway to Cuba from the beach fins allow me to hold station on duckdives and to get out. I usually can get out in Hurricane Surf when most standups can't without mechanical assistance.

I ride a 5'10" FP and have noticed that the wide point and tail shape make a difference in how my legs (6'0" tall) fall off the back for paddling. Bruce did know that I used fins when he shaped the board so don't know if he allowed for my fins. My board is also a potato chip but paddles as well as any board I have including a 6'0" with more foam. Assume the rocker has as much to do with the paddling as anything.

flippers again

Post by sf_firestarter »

We'll I had my first sessions with flippers again and was very surprised by some results. I'm convinced now that flippers account for 6" or even more virtual board length. I found myself pulling into waves earlier than many longboarders.

I've also as a result of the time without fins seen some great impovement in my surfing, paddling and positioning. I'll be going finless on small days from now on and using the fins when needed.

As one that rides smaller boards with the fins back fins are a mainstay with me, and believe me I can paddle fine without them. I have surfed without them and there is alot of merit in almost every opinion in this post. My fins allow me to ride much smaller boards in larger more critical waves than if I didn't wear them. I ride some big wedge on 5'6" & 7's just to be able to make some of the adjustments mid face when it's past vertical, and I used the same size board at HT's this year whenit was approaching DOH (definitely glad I was wearing fins) I did move up to a 5'9" when we surfed 15' lances left(again ,glad I wore fins) .
More than anything do what you have fun doing and do it the way you want, not the way somone else says you should. Isn't that why we are KB'ers and not footboarders? 8)

Don't worry Damo, you can't kill this this thread. It's been recycled several times now and just keeps coming back over and over again.
