Surfed some eastside for the past few days. The extra-large to Giant NW swell hitting now produced alot of wrap-around surf potential. Sunday, an outside reef that gets good a few times a year was near what you could call firing 6 feet or a bit bigger with dead winds to offshore Konas. Mellow local crew out with tons of waves, 4 hours of surfing bliss, my arms still hurt. Today we thought we'd get smart and surf a different eastside spot. Expecting offshores and long rides we got skunked with sideshore chop and frothing washthrough sets. I guess that's the story of the eastside, no matter if you're Johnny-on-the-spot or not you will get skunked. Still had some fun rides, though. This series of storms is not through, more on the way. March is a tricky month but a good month.

Here's a recent shot of Mavericks from last week. It was smaller then than today. But this wipeout reminds all of why we either love or hate surfing in big waves.

Amazing story about Monterey SFkneelo thanks for the link.

Just got back from a SB work roadtrip; surfed Hammonds, Rincon, and Ventura all in about the 8 to 10 range. El Cap was breaking but only about head high on wednesday @noon. All of the points in the SB area had waves. Rincon was solid DOH on wednesday afternoon low tide. Crowd was heavy so I surfed Hammonds, then Rincon thursday am.

The most amazing thing about the area/trip was all the points had about forty wave starved surfers at all of them all day long. :(

Every place I checked had a crowd. Refugio, and couple minor break north of Goleta as well. Every surfer living Ventura and SB must have taken the time off of work/school. Both Rincon parking lots were almost totally full maybe only 6 spaces available.

I got Ventura point with only about 10 guys out for an hour 1:30 to 2:30 then by 3:00 there was at least 30 surfers at the point on thursday.

No. EVERY surfer from Berkeley,Sandiego,Orange county, LA and SB and Ventura, come to Ventura and SB points when the swell is Big.It was Packed !!! Everyone surfs now. People take off work and school when the surf report and news say to . Medium swells without everyone are a the only way to surf here any more....... It seems they are all stoked though!

John,

I also met surfers from Pismo Beach and Cayucos as well. So better add central Cal to your list. The bottom line is information is readily available now days and when the swell is on everybody knows it.

One cool thing about the trip is that I did realize that one of my design projects, retrofitting the entrance to the mouth of Monticito Creek, is right at Hammonds.

Oh well, live and learn. One good thing is even with all the crowds I did not witness one bad vibe in the line up in the those three days. :D

Syd - you are one lucky man!!! Isn't Hammonds sucha fun wave? Miramar (just south of Hammond's) gets reall fun with some size as well. Let me know next time you go up and there is going to be some size - I know of a couple of other spots that probably won't be so crowded.

I was able to surf Hammonds a bunch around 1976. Fun wave and crowd.

Also, the access to Hammonds Reef was one fo the first meaningful victories for the Surfrider Foundation.

Right you are Beeline. A healthy south is hitting Pleasure Point as we speak. The morning was magic. Water temp. 60, air temp 75, wave temp Hot. The Bay was sheet glass until 2.00 then a light northwest began to blow. I have pictures to prove it in the general photo section. The waves were twice the size of the ones I captured. We had my brother Dale, Roger H., "caveman" Eric and myself out at Sewer Peak and 1st Peak. The bowls at Sewer Peak were Grinding and the walls at first peak were long with great faces to rip. Rides were long the best I've surfed both places in the same day.
