Shark attack

Thanks for the book ref - off to get it now. Just a note, the ref is (I think there's a "s" missing in the title above):
Great white sharks : the biology of Carcharodon carcharias / edited by A. Peter Klimley, David G. Ainley
Publisher: San Diego : Academic Press, c1996
Duane,
If memory serves me correctly that is the second attack at Noordhoek in 2 years.
Was it at Dunes or the Hoek?
Probably relates to the return of the outhern Right whales to the area
Scott,
Shark is the staple of fish and chip shops in Australia. It's served as "flake". Usually Gummy Sharks. Not Whites, one hopes, since they are a protected endangered species.
Hell, no one managed to stab or shoot me when I was in the SWAT team, I didn't get spinal injured in 10 years of Rugby, managed to by-pass the poisonous snakes I've got too close to, avoided serious car accidents so far...and I've had far far more fun surfing. I could stay out of the water and limit chances of attack, but why? It's a considered risk, just like all the other stupid things we do.

Hey Red
The whales only start showing up in July/August and leave again in October. The guy was attacked at the dunes. The Last guy was also attacked at the dunes but unfortunately died before they could get him to the beach.
This guy was only nibbled tho. A few lacerations to his leg. He is english tho so I guess the shark didn't like the taste of processed pom.
I've got a new obsession tho.
Check out this website.

I surf with this guy most mornings. He lives just around the corner from me. He's a bit of a dawn patroller.
The "funny" thing is that most of the time he surfs on a coolite (ie: foam board) at Tamarama. I bet he's glad that he had the fibreglass Aloha to stick in its mouth
The board would make a great talking point if stuck up on the wall
I've just got back from a surf at Bronte and it was all the talk in the water. Didn't seem to thin the crowd out though - 20 guys plus in the water at 9.00am.

are we just big lures?
from below a KB especially with flippers and a shiny new multi coloured
sprayjob looks suspis suspisc a lot like a big Pakula marlin lure
I had one years ago with big eyes and shark teeth a la a WW2 spitfire
Dad, a game fisherman, made me sell it straight away!
I'll justify my scungy old board somehow!!
dont yachtsmen paint their hulls to help avoid whales, I remember kay cottee saying something like that...
what happenned to the board mounted radio freq. shark repeller?

Old Kneelos just takeoff later...
Who needs sharks?
"A GOLFER about to play a shot on a suburban course was killed yesterday in a freak accident when a branch of the giant gum tree she was standing under crashed to the ground."
I suspect falling bits of trees kill more people in Australia than sharks. We should do the right thing and cut 'em all down!

Rising to the bait - when talking shark attack comparisons with the risk posed by bee stings, dog bites etc are somewhat redundant - most of us face these risks. These things are trying to eat us - it's a different more primal fear.
I would like to suggest a challenge, for my part I will cover myself with honey and torment some bees under a suitably dangerous old tree while one of our risk analogy proponents takes a leisurely swim in the Gold coast canals (bull shark central).
Despite the loss of my dignity I won’t be the one shitting bricks.
I'd add a smiley face but can't figure out how to do it
