Railgrabbing -- explain this to me
Moderator: Moderator
I personally don’t have any problem with the rail grab however it should not be done to overcome poor technique of a learner. If you are grabbing the rail because your knees are too close to gain a good balance then you won’t progress. You need to learn to turn using your body first then you can then grab the rail for extra power if you want to. If you put you hands on the rails as you drop in on a wave you may find that you loose control as the flow of water on the rail is disrupted. A rail grab at the right time can look dynamic and be very functional i.e hard bottom turn or pulling in to the green room. I personally don’t touch the rails too often as that is not my style but there is nothing wrong with it as you advance.
At the risk of starting a rant: common sense would suggest that to have good technique your knees need to be a good distance apart to give you good balance and you need to keep your centre of gravity low. Kneel well behind the wide point in a leaning forward position – this allows you to change your weight on the board by moving your shoulders across the board rather than simply bending at the waist – just watch most top riders (but like all things there are some brilliant anomalies)
Take easy you all. Tony

BUT
I learnt to rail grab in Hawaii
I was getting lots of late take-offs because of the board I was on. I learnt to hold both rails as I got pitched by the lip. This ensured that I stayed with the board and landed without a bounce so i could let go and roll into the bottom turn.
never say never (oops!)

As you advance in your skill........and start to ride hollower more powerful surf ,using outside hand on a rail will give you more drive on hard bottom turns and tube rides ..using both hands on rails the duration of a ride is as lame as, sitting up on your knees and flailing your arms constantly twisting side to side.

please - no more.

it's just your style on kneeboarding. example...i grab my rail alot more on rights then lefts. it also pulls me close to the face of the wave in the barrel.
when you are trying to keep balance in the barrel i would rather grab rail than eat it in the barrel and not make it out
.

Exactly! ! and if you dont like it TFB! grab the rail, dont grab the rail, fly superman style or brab your ass really who the heck cares. as long as you have the stoke and are having a good time than thats whats important all this bickering about rail grabs is lame. would you prefer "went for a rail grab and decided to try stand up surfing instead! too much bickering on style points"it's just your style on kneeboarding.

here i was all in support of railgrabbing and I became more contientious of it after this topic and found that i seldom rail grab other than when faced with a choice to go over the falls or grab the rail and to defy gravity. but either way i dont see it being an issue
bedsides i hear non rail grabbers have a little peni to satisfy thier woman with lol
