"I've watched the downward spiral of the surfing spirit in general from the inside looking out. The soul of the adventure has been lost in it's commerciality and marketability. For those reasons alone I detest contest surfing.."
I think that is a very accurate description of standup surfing contests and our association with them in the past. From that point on I disagree....
My goal as an athlete and surfer is to advance my performance in whatever measure that may be and to push my old body beyond comfort. As lone wolf as I am....I need a benchmark for performance...a goal to meet and exceed.
I found the KSUSA Gathering/Titles format to be painless. It was an excellent comparison of my progress with my peers. Watching the Gathering was also a study of styles. It was apparent to me that we are products of our "kneelo" environments. Point, beachbreak, SoCal, NorCal...all dramatically different in their approach to a wave and the equipment they rode. It was all good...just different.

Surfing Sucks!
It does'nt matter weather you ride a kneeboard standup sponge or coffee table. Big, small, hollow, crumbly, glassy or choppy. It just dont matter This post and its emotional and political rants prove it. Surfing sucks in general. The question you guys seem to be asking is why does it suck? AND How can I make it not suck for me?
Solitude is the answer.
Search out sessions by yourself. Paddle out before dawn. Go surf at night. Drive fly or sail to spots where there are no other people around. The men who surf where it is extremely cold or big are more stoked than anyone I have ever met. Thats because they surf alone more often than not. Remember the best sessions you have ever had. I'm sure it did not include 50 other surfers scratching for the same peak or a competition situation. It was you and maybe a couple others out and thats it.
Contests have their place but the fact that contests are sometimes judged by men and women with agendas makes them suspect. Somebody is always trying to sell something and contests are a great place to advertise. This is why some people on this thread think contests have killed kneeboarding."The problem I have with contests is they close that section of beach to have them."
The invention of the boggieboard had more to do with the lack of new kneelos than anything else. Not a lot of ads selling kneeboards but over the same time period...boggieboards sold millions due to advertising and contests.
I have been welcomed into the lineup all over the place. Over the years I have also caused some strong emotions in the lineup, good and bad from time to time. I have been asked doesnt that hurt your knees? and is that a kneeboard? countless times. My answer has always been yes, but that is not always honest. Honestly though surfing sucks when we divide it up into groups and try and sell our take on it as the best for all. Surfing is an individual experiance and should always remain that way.
This is just the opinion of an average surfer that happens to surf on his knees.

Go see "ONE CALIFORNIA DAY". A great movie that premiered the other evening at the Lido in Newport. It's a film that shows true individuals riding the equipment they desire in the fashion that makes them feel free. There were some insane waves shown up and down the CA coast. I was truly inspired and wanting even more to keep on and refining my Kneeboarding odyssey. My surfing glass is more than half full!

Ditto MW,
Jason's(film creator) mom turns out is my mom- in- law's childhood friend. Jason and I have been corresponding for the last couple of years and was honored to attend the preview at el segundo high a couple of monthes back. It was pretty cool meeting Tyler and others of the south bay-most def a special film. The photography is stunning and IMHO the story line is a excellent representation of the surf culture( except there is no Kneeboarding sequences
) here in California.I did mention to him (he knows that I come from a slightly predudice POV in regards to Kneeboarding)-so maybe who knows next time? I will push ever so gently
. Or whatever it takes-maybe we all should collaborate and make suggestions?????
peace
Kevin

Seems like a bit of an overreaction. I lived on a remote island where I was the only surfer 99% of the time at the time I attended my last contest in Santa Cruz. I guess if one is living the soulful experience, the contests do not seem so ominous. Let's put this in perspective. I don't see a grueling pro knee tour coming up anytime soon.
And I want some commercialization in kneeboarding. I want to know that next time I need a quality board or accessory that there is someone out there to supply my needs.
I hate the current Surfing Billabong-America-Australia-Whatever and just don't see us ever selling enough t-shirts to 14 year olds to be caught in that type of commercialism. I do want to see if my surfing and equipment is on a par with other surfers.

I think the flat summer we've just had and the crowds here in SoCal are getting to me. But my opinion is just that. Mine. If you share it, awesome if you don't thats fine too.
The people who know me know I love to surf. They also know I like to stir the pot once in a while.
So Padre Island hmmmm I feel a vacation coming on or maybe thats retirement.
Hey Quadfin... Do you have an extra room?
Always remember... Baja is way to dangerous to visit. You could be car jacked or worse.

If we don't get surf soon my whole house will be available. We are getting a few retiring surfers now and quite a few semi retired. The market is still reasonable.jim richardson wrote:I think the flat summer we've just had and the crowds here in SoCal are getting to me. But my opinion is just that. Mine. Hey Kevin,
Damn, I thought I was the only kneelo at the One California Day premier at 'Gundo high school.
Next time you venture to the South Bay, let me know. SuperEq and I are the only ones consistently surfing El Porto. It'd be nice to see a new face in the line-up.

Why do Moroccan tree climbing goats make great pets?
a. They'll mow, and fertilize, your lawn.
b. They can climb trees!
c. Goat's milk, cheese, yogurt, etc is pretty tasty
d. The goats themselves are pretty tasty.

Sprocky,
Yeah i am in the SB at least twice a week -usually more afternoon time calling on customers.however I would be up for it. Is it a flashpoint only affair or are blasts or modern fishes allowed???
I have this last winter, done a few go outs at el porto as my general rule is to end up at a point or beach to avoid the 405 at all costs.I probably could do a mid to late AM
sesh and then do my biz afterwards if you or EQ could swing it.
Peace
Kevin
