I'll go along with andy,5k,And yet I have a hunch there are more than we assume there are.....
As an aside...I like the fact the numbers are small. How often do you drive past variouis surf spots and ''really ''notice the footies?YAWN..unless the're smokin..
Like in the old days,if you had a vw,and saw another one,why..we'd actually wave and honk...
Ships passing in the night...Kbers-bless us all

Interesting that there sems to be a feeling that its a good thing to be in a minority - I guess kneelos have always wanted to be a bit different (or better ?).
Are we in danger of becoming extinct as a species ? In RSA most kneelos are pretty hardcore, but the population is ageing - you dont see many kids on kneeboards, its mainly the guys that have been kneeboarding for 10, 15 or 20 years.
Recently I started coaching my son (7) to surf stand-up but he just wants to "kneesurf" like his dad so maybe there's hope !

Once a kneeboarder, always a kneeboarder.....
An old friend of mine grew up here in Santa Cruz and we used to KB from here to the tip of Baja. Then he and his wife moved to Tahoe where he became a member of the Sheriff's Rescue Squad, doing all the mountain stuff.
But he still has a kneeboard in Tahoe for travel......and one in his condo in Hawaii.
He doesn't KB on a daily basis but this guy is truly a solid kneeboarder.

good thing come in small packages....
'' a good thing to be in a minority ''
Maybe....Keeps it fresh.Don't see that many kneelos up this side,so my curosity is slightly tweaked whenever it occurs.
Do I want to be different--No.Better?If that means progressing in surfing/or dealing with the various issues,[crowds, wackos, and hooligans]Yes.
Are we becoming extinct..Don't think so,as there will always be a ''few''who will ever so slightly fill the ranks,as they understand the benefits of what we do. [Surfing is surfing-no?]
cheers

What's really weird is that I've been surfing Lis's old haunt for the past few years and recently KBing and I've yet to see another kneeboarder out there. And there are only three at the pointbreak just up the coast that I see with any consistency. This used to be ground zero for the whole movement on the west coast. We ARE an endangered species if those are any indications. But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Anytime something seeks legitimization from the mainstream, it is invariably changed in some way, and usually for the worse. Just flip on the tele and see NBA stars talking about "this surfing thing" while promoing the new Toyota. I long for the days when surfers would get chased out of grocery stores. Of course that may stem from the fact that I am not old enough to have experienced those times. I prefer my view through a sepia filter.

We're not in Oz any more. Dorothy lost the sepia filter when her house landed and she opens the door onto the yellow brick road. If you do the Pink Floyd-Dark Side Of The Moon sincronization, the song Money kicks in at the exact time the film turns to color. Too cool for school!!
Check this out. Raymond, a newbie from TEXAS via Newkirkdrive and KSUSA is coming to the Florida gathering and riding his new Flashpoint!
Maybe we are in OZ and the sepia filter is working just fine.
