swellnet...is the honeymoon over?

Post by john - »

some great predictions in the first two months of this year at its inception

but the talk amongst punters in the water - particulaly those who travel is that accuracy is well down

cynics were saying now that hits and advertising has kicked in someone is smoking a fat cigar and and looking at their morning paper for clues

harsh but when its cold and the waves are 2 foot under the call...and the call was 3 to 4 foot...

how are those elswear in Ozz finding things...or is this just a localised frustrated winters vent

swellnet is like the weather forcast on tv/radio
it is only a guide, they sometimes get it right, but not always!
Hey, what did we do in the old days before the internet, and surf forcasting?

even with all the modern gadgets, bells and whistles. the guys who get the lions share of good waves either live right on it or check it all the time.

good post Mike..

I was talking to Michael Nov some time ago about living on the water (or right next to it).

Barton Lynch was a Mosman lad (where Bud McCray's father once lived) and had to travel to the water as a kid.

Still only like 20 minutes away (but way worse during peak hours)..he didn't win a World Title (1987?) until he moved in with Mick Mock (kneelo legend) on the beach at North Steyne (Manly).

Cross the road and you're wet.

Crawford lived on the second floor of an apartment DIRECTLY above DY Point during his principal years..like, you could throw your empty stubbie (dead marine?) onto First Rock (not that ya would) but!

Nov himself grew up in Clarke Street..6 lanes and a block from Southy (Narrabeen) and from the moment he woke up in the morning, he knew exactly what was going on 8)

Living next to the Ocean and having a certain degree of flexibility in your working life can sure lift your surfing to another level..

:D and maybe let you save on some internet fees :D

ps

what way is the wind blowin' anyway?

funny thing
alot of mates of mine who have grown up in my area, some are good surfers, have no idea how to read a weather map and are unable to see good waves on the way because they have been spoilt by living so close to the ocean.
maybe i only know cause the old man showed me 8)
my brother in law,a Tasmanian is awesome at using the net to source good waves as are my friends in Ireland.its just wrong how on the money they are(pr#cks).
which could have something to do with long range swells and landlocked point breaks :) .

I hear the swell from home and have a wind sock so this helps immediate and spontaneous surfs

...swellnet i use to try and predict which day on the weekend I should put my hand up for taking the kids for a walk whilst the mrs goes to gym or the like

this can be a crucial call

Sometimes a bum surf report can work in your favor, last weekend surfline was calling for 1' to 3' and poor.

I took a look anyway ended up 3' to 5' offshore really good and only 5 guys out 8)

Steeno's "Brown glass" wave was featured on Magicseaweed.com a few days ago. I haven't been able to be on this site, but they also had his other photos of Chayne and Albert. It was cool seeing pics of kneeboarding on a surf report web site. Good job Steen! 8)
