anyone got the drum on a good leggie

snapped an ocean and earth on the weekend (7mm)...it was about to go at either end where its connected to the hard black rubber case (should look at these thing more often)...one year old and whilst I let the board go on occasions im not sure thats to blame...maybe just solid use

Shop man recommended longer rope and perhaps hand stitched variety...without double swivel

the hand stitched variety interests me as they look old style with the modern things like a key pocket

anyway if you have 2 cents......

I agree with Martin, Da Kine makes good leashes. I've only broken one, their hollow one. They call it the super lite, floating, it sounds good in theory but they're pretty wimpy. Da Kine gave me a refund for the warranty but I wouldn't buy another one. Stick with the regular solid core Kainui series, 6 or 7 foot for small surf, 8 foot for big. Keep it out of the sun/heat, the swivels lubed and check your plug cord(s) regularly and it should last a while. It will last exceptionally long if you use it as an absolutely last line of defense to keep you connected to your board, opting for your kung fu grip and getting spun head over heels as your first line of defense.

Use the creatures of leisure matt lacky model bicep leash with an added big-wave nomad coil to give that extra length...... i like this because theres no drag of a leg leash behind you and if your ever caught on a huge sucking rock with 15 foot whitewater pounding into you at mavericks and your leash is stuck, freedom is just a arms reach away.

I've broke 4 OE leggies in 3 years. Trying Balin out now as they got a great rap in Tracks mag last year.

for interest where did the oe leggies break...is there a weak point over the three that busted


my last Balin fell apart but that was before the double swivel innovation which seems to have solved the pressure on stiching

hey dorje,
i once worked on the production line for a legrope company.
when the guy says hand stitched i think he means "hand tied".

two reasons for going the hand tied option;
1)they are stronger than the moulded joints
2)you can repair them if the fault is near the ankle strap

and having a swivel doesnt hurt either.
as you'd imagine i had plenty of oportunity to test out different lengths and hardware combos.

be careful with longer leggies dont wear em on shallow reefs.
last year i was holding my mate Bens head above water on that real ugly section at gnarloo.we took 6-8 ten foot waves on the head before we got to undo his legrope strap.that was an OE 7mmx1.8 hand tied job, and he's still using it coral cuts and all

i reckon the OE are good,they tend to last me 12-18 months of surfing every day there's waves .

Balins seem less prone to failure than the O&Es

I always overgun on leashes and remember a little prevention prevents a long swim (and board dings) - check the durn thing out once in a while

I always put an extra piece of rope from leash to leash plug and an extra piece of rope from swivel to rail saver. Can't be too carefull when your beach is made of boulders
