How to deal with Chop?

Post by fincut »

Is there a technique for dealing with chop? It seems chop get magnified by 10 when I'm KBing. I tend to really drive when taking off by extending forward and straighting out the thighs. Should I lay or sit back more on the board to avioid taking some big hops?

How do you combat chop?

Thanks,

Take the middle road when dealing with rough surface conditions.

Try to kneel neither fully croutched nor fully extended.

Stay hunched over slightly, croutching with your thighs just above your lower legs, loose and springy.
Try keep your arms lower than you shoulders for better control and balance.

Grab a rail if needed, but don't stiffen up or strong arm it.

Remember stay loose not rigid.

Let the board run over the chop with your lower body adjusting slightly as needed while your upper body stays relaxed and relatively stable.

It's a bit like skiing the bumps.
Similar mechanics at play just subtler movements.

umm..

try putting a little more curve into your rocker and your board wont want to leave the water so often

that way..you (the surfer) are a little more in control

:D

just an aussie comment

ps

apart from that..do what Bud says about the thigh/ lower legs bit

a mat?
Definitely. Rode on the other day in south wind lumpy gravey. If ridden w/ low air volume they sort of ease over the lumps changing their own shape instead of bashing the water aside. Think shock absorbers.

Lot's of design issues could be discussed, but as a novice to the sport, technique is your main concern at this stage in your learning.
