Stoked for you Womble, and a tad envious.

Many great recommendations here but I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Phil Jarratt's fine biography of Jeff Hakman, Mr Sunset. (Gen X / General Publishing Group). Not fiction, but a great and very moving read.

Tomway, anything by Tim Winton's worth reading. Apart from being a great writer he has my respect for three reasons.
1. He's made a living from writing without compromising his work since his teens.
2. He's a surfer.
3. He does a lot for some pretty worthy environmental causes.

On top of all that he's a thoroughly decent kind of guy. Cloudstreet is a must.

Went out to buy Stoked by Bob McTavish and came home with Breathe by Tim Winton so far a great read thanks guys for getting me off the sex drugs and rock n roll trip although the last 2 books i read were a good read one on Led Zeppelin the other on Billy Thorpe ,the common denominator is they revolve around the same era
Could i be locked in a time warp or headed for a mid life crisis ...hope so

Surfing Dictionary by Jarrat and the bloke who drew Captain Goodvibes is a fun little book - might be hard to get hold of though. Brilliant cartoons!
all the best,

+1 on "Stoked". Got it for Christmas as well and really enjoying it.

My two favourites are "West Of Jesus" by Steven Kotler. The title is a little misleading - it's a great story about a quest to finds the origins of a surf legend.

The other is "High Surf" by Tim Baker. A great collection of stories that, to me, really capture the essence of what it is to surf.

Check out The Lost Coast by Drew Kampion. A series of short stories by a the legendary surf journalist.

Also, thanks everyone for all the ideas. I printed the entire post and am going to the book store to buy a few. I'm a big reader and always looking for a new cool writer.

Can't say i have - and I've also asked a bunch of friends the same question with no positive results... I guess now anyone who did say they knew of it probably got it from the book!
