reversing your churchill fins

Post by redmond »

hi guys (and gals?). Just had a brainstorm the other day regarding my churchill fins. it always bothered me that the long edge of the fin was on the outside of the fin to possibly hang over the rail of the board and create drag and unwanted steering characteristics, so i switched the left and right fin so the long edge is now on the inside. IT WORKS GREAT. It probably is my imagination but i could swear they are even more efficient now, and they are more comfortable to kick with.

I've done that before Redmond by accident before, it does work (kind of), the outer side of the fin is now in the middle, so the long blades now in the middle will rub together when kicking but that's not so bad! Get a fish and you won't have that that fin drag, or ditch the fins!

hey Mark,I too was surprised that i had no adverse effects from the switch and even more surprised that it felt a more powerful kicking thrust with the longer inside orientation. I have always like the churchill fins from my bodyboarding days and have not found anything better. but now there is no way i'd change fin styles.

I would advise against wearing them on the wrong feet unless you live in a perfectly flat concrete world. If the long tip on the inside catches on a rock or bump and folds under, you can not lift your foot to correct it and will fall hard and do damage to your bones/joints of your big and second toes, ouch ouch ouch. and board and wetsuit and ego ouch.

I think they put Left and Right on there for a reason!!

I trim my XL blades straight accross and wear the factory edge on the outside. It has an added advantage when some footie says you catch all the waves cause you wear fins. Just show them you clip your fins, so that you dont have an unfair advantage.

churchill's

Post by Jack Beresford »

Has anyone else tried those new HUBB Makapuu Churchill's? I got mine last week and like them a lot. Basic Makapuu but a bit stiffer blade, neopreme inside-top pocket and ankle loop (super comfy). And the jet black color is cool! Now we just need some surf!

E Bodyboarding.com says the Hubbs run about one and a half sizes smaller than the standard Churchills. Jack, did you have to go up a size?

guaranteed to eliminate fin drag

Hubb's

Post by Jack Beresford »

I got my Hubb's Makapuu online. Same size as my reg Churchill's seems to be working. That extra padding inside and on the ankle is nice (and probably accounts for the smaller size).

Jack, Did you happen to get your Hubb makapuu's online similar to:
www.swimfins.net/churchll-hubb-makapuu-swimfins.html
They say that this site has free shipping! And because of the extra padding in the fins, you should go up a size.
