Great week of surf

Post by JohnS »

Just returned from a week long camp\surf along the central California coast. Good solid surf with excellent conditions 9 days in a row. Even scored a few of the reef breaks between Cambria and Cayucos. Stoked 8)

Looks like it's still breaking good around here in Santa Cruz too...

Welcome to fall :!:

Sometimes dreams do come true, 49th reunion @ Rockview w/ friends from 1st grade coincided w/ decent SW'er. Walked 8 mi r/t on 9-29 to find a r-hand pt break zippering down the line at waist to 2' OH, super mellow non-crowd, sheet shimmering glass to slightly side-offshore, most perfect waves I've ridden in years, everyone had big grins, no grumps seen/heard all day, nice to have tailwind on walk back. Next day 9-30 not 'nuff time to do the walk again, 7 boats this day and a bigger more consistent swell - went instead to a ledgy spot where the "grump" factor came into play. Oh well, magic day memories from Saturday will last forever.

What is perfect? What is epic? Is epic just a notch down from perfect? Ok, let's take it down another notch to almost epic today. Had to find a corner on the waves, but no current, water temp. around 71-73f, sunny, no wind. Went out at 1pm and Wanderer showed up around 3pm. It was a good day.

Well....It wasn't epic or perfect, just scarey... Biggest nw/s combo this yr.on the north reefs.Breaking way out in the kelp beds, and dodgeing the thick mats was a chore.Stuck inside on a 6/8 wave set with a wicked side current....1/2 mile down the reef.Didn't get many,no body did.... Little spot inside duxbury reef was going good.4/6 Oh sets...Now this was ''epic''!Rarely breaks.A real treat.Water temp was 59!A few babes were out trunking.. 8) For hrs...real women up here.

Hurricane Rafael directly offshore- biggest and best I've seen southern NC in years. 6' at 14 sec, light offshores, groomed sandbars, air 80 water 75F. Didn't see another surfer- surfed by myself all day. The Blast was flying. What a day.

Wow, all by yourself on one of the best days ever? How many of us can say we've had that experience...
