While lamenting my Blast big wave board starting to crack after 10 years of use in some pretty big surf, I really perked up when I saw Bud's recent post selling off one of his personal 6'3" roundtails designed for larger, fast surf. So it was time to make the case to my sweet wife of 34 years, Pam. She knows I occasionally "need" to add a new board, but somehow it always pains her. Just why is that? She needs shoes; I need rockets.

Anyway, after I ink the deal with Bud for my new stick, she queries on Facebook to her whole social world, "Can someone tell me just how many surfboards does one man need?!

TO MY RESCUE: EQ responded back to her Facebook post almost immediately with THE definitive answer:

That's easy, Pammy.

X divided by Y = # of Boards

X = 28
X is the size waves your man rides. Unfortunately for you, Scott is a beast, and easily handles waves into the 28ft Range.

Y= 4
You need to switch to a different board every 4ft of wave face.

So: at least 7 boards in Scott's case... But of course he needs back-up since they break. (I've seen Scott buckle two boards myself)

Final answer: a minimum of 14!!!!

What could my wife say? Faced with his unassailable logic, I'm sure the light has finally broken in upon her. I even imagine she must actually now admire my latest choice and how I keep my working quiver down to about 5 boards.

I tell ya, EQ has like an honorary Ph.D in Surphysicspsychology -- one of the truly neglected graduate majors of our time.

Well, as the wife of a kneelo, JT and I have a great arrangement, I find him new boards, he finds me new lenses or what I refer to as "sparklyies" (trinkets from our travels).

But this is my theory about boards:
Boards are like shoes... you can NEVER have too many
Boards are like books....each one tells a story
Boards are like jewelry...they all get used/worn for different occassions/swell
Boards are like pieces of art...they should be hung on the walls, as they are all proudly displayed in our living room.

Now, I kindly ask you share this wisely with your wives or significant others...as I don't want to cause of any arguements in your homes.

I'll add that having multiple boards can help them "all" last longer.

Swapping boards, built for various wave types and or conditions, used primarily for such.
They are less likely to wear out.

They stay "fresher" longer, retain the resonant spring and lively feel of new foam.
You surf better, have greater success rate of made waves, reducing the chance of breaking one in a wipeout.
$ saved in the long run.

Bud- So true. Never thought of that.
Having at least a:
- crap wave board
- decent wave board
- great wave board
- big wave board

Allows you to rotate, never be under/over gunned, and keeps your boards and skills fresh.

Razor needs to buy another house just for his boards.

Bud, I kept riding that board over the years because it was truly a magic board. It was very fast and rock steady in the largest surf I've been able to ride on the West Coast--it just kinda seemed to yawn at me on most of the best waves I'd take off on, kind of an attitude like "is this ALL you've got for me today?!"

Hard to put a board like that up on the shelf, but your board has done that (it just arrived today, BTW, and is definitely lighter!).

My method...

Talk to shaper - order board - arrive home with new stick under arm

It is better to ask forgiveness than permission!

I always tell her why I NEEDED the new board, never "wanted".

Just go ask the Mrs to play 18 holes of golf with a putter.

I just say: "Squishy i need a new board".
and she will say: "ok, atleast its not another fishtank" (i already have 11 fishtanks and not 11 boards)
