Kneeboarding history: Steve Lis / Jeff Sheen

I heard somewhere that Steve Lis used to borrow Jeff Sheen's (Spelling?) kneeboard before he designed his fishtail shortboard, possibly inspired by Bear Mirandon's (Surfboards La Jolla) fishtail in '67.

Anyone know more or know Jeff or his contemporaries?

PS Bear probably got the idea from Simmons or Tom Blake.

Steve Lis/Jeff Ching

Red, I think you mean Jeff Ching? It's the other way around. While attending San Diego State University, he befriended a teenage kneeboarder who made a small blunt nosed paipo like kneeboard he called the fish. Jeff asked Stevie if he could surf it, paddled out at the Cliffs and was able to stand up. Check this out from RK's Blog: http://hydrodynamica.com/totem/fish.php

I see Barry "Bear" Mirandon at my work all the time. He created the twin pin surfboard in '67 at La Jolla Surboards which he owned with brother Nick. He no longer shapes anymore. He seems like a very nice guy. I once pointed him out to a co-worker who stand-up surfs, and said "That man is a 'legend'." His reply was "Who"? "Nevermind ya kook".

Thanks for the link, Mike. Hadn't seen that one.

Mark,
You're right, Reno and Jeff rode Steve's board because they had long wanted a standup paipo. Maybe I heard wrong or someone was trying to re-write history. I was just wondering if Steve did indeed borrow kneeboards from earlier proponents and who they were.

There's a murky bit of our history between paipos and Steve Lis and GG. Now and again there's a mention of people like longtime kneeboarder Doc and also Joe Curren having a kneeboard in his quiver. I'm trying to join those dots.

Red, email me and I will fill in the blanks. Both links fall short of crucial facts which are still not for public consumption.

Waiting Red. Surfed with and got great coaching from Bud as a menehune in Town late sixties. Still making and riding paipos from his templates!
