Camping on the North Shore

Post by Chris Buscemi »

Does anyone have any info about camping on the North Shore? I have only been able to find two possibilities:Malaekahana Bay State Recreation Area and Camp Mokuleia. The second of the two, Camp Mokuleia, looks more promising than the other. Any info or recommendations would be great. Adios- Chris

Chris,
search back in this thread. there is a bit of info on this subject. in my opinion Malaekahana is the better of the two for several reasons. if you have any more questions let me know. Craig Stokes (aka Gnassi) wrote a great post on camping on the north shore.

North Shore Camping

Post by Chris Buscemi »

Mike- Thanks for the info. I do have some questions for you. According to the Malaekahana Bay State Recreation Area info that I am able to find it looks as if you can't get your vehicle out before 7am. Do you know if this is the case? Also why do you consider this campsite to be superior to the other? Thanks again and I hope to surf with you sometime in February.

Chris,
the info on the locking of the gates is true. i believe it's 7p-7a closed. this keeps out rip-offs and trouble makers. you can park your car in the front parking lot (on the other side of the gate) and walk if you have to get up early. i usually don't surf early. i get to Hale'iwa cafe at 7:30 for breakfast, digest and check spots and hit it by 9. so this does'nt bother me. there is 24hr security so you can leave your camping gear and not worry about it. there are hot showers which is awesome. it's $5 a nite! can't beat that. there are some pretty good surf spots within walking distance of your tent if it's kona winds. accomodations and economy rental car, $30 a nite. feel free to PM me for any info. so we don't bore the masses. i'll be there 3rd week of feb. see you then!

Chris,

I might add that Mokuleia is further away from the Sunset area than Kahuku. A 20 minute drive at best but with the traffic these days it's longer. Kahuku is only 10 minutes away.
Shopping is closer for the Malaekahana camp site.
Just 5 minutes South is Laie shopping center.
2 minutes away is Kahuku Superett and Circle K as well as Giovani's Shrimp wagon.

It's also far more scenic area. Lush, green and very rural.
Mokuleia is a bit dry and scruffy. The airstrip out there is also semi busy with small planes, so there's that added noise.

I'm hoping we can get our crew some good sessions near or in Kahuku.
I've got a card up my sleave that'll gain us drive in beach access for Kahuku Golf course. 8)

There's several good surf spots there, fishing is good and it makes an epic picnic location, ideal for kids and families. Simon will have his family, (wife,2 kids, inlaws), with him as well as David Parkes (wife + 2 kids).

If conditions permit we might be able to set up a camp there for a couple of days. That would be WAY > 8)

Hawaiian Airlines currently has fares $149 (each way) before Feb 10 and $169 after Feb 10 between socal and Hawaii. Aloha has $149 each way from LA to Honolulu and $169 each way from San Diego (good all through Feb). I think there are similar deals from San Francisco.

Count Me In

Post by Marcman »

Wow I just read all the posts again and it made me even more amped! :D
I feel like a little kid waiting for mommy to tell me it’s ok to stay up past 7pm. :?

I am there bud.
Hopefully from 1 Feb for 4 weeks, will let you know very soon.

If there is anyone else that is not convinced yet, get with it, an opportunity to see Kneelo Mayhem 2005! Will be worth the trip alone, let alone Sparrow moving his board about in directions you never thought it can go.

I was at the 2003 inaugural NS gathering and the waves where there and never let us down! :!:

Here are some pictures I shot!

...I could probably handle the waves in the bottom r quad; then again, I'd probably be distracted by the sunset and not even get any waves. WoW!

Hey Bud,

I'll be there as many days as possible...
For those who I didn't see this year, the NS Gathering 2004 was held around the time of the birth of my new son, Noah..

So I was small kine busy and out of commission for a while..

Bud I'm hoping to surf some early morning with you this winter. Not too many guys like to crack it like you, McGuire, and Sears...

Aloha,
David Shinbara
