For those in Oz (or outside the US for that matter), who, like me, were wondering where Santa Cruz is and basic details:
http://www.santacruzca.org
Having been to San Fransico in January, I know that it will be cold BUT I also know that ski resorts are not far away (eg: Lake Tahoe area, Utah and Colorado just to name a few).
Never been on a surf AND ski holiday - I'm thinking that December 2006 might be the time to start
....and a White Xmas would be very cool.

If the KSUSA run a worlds anything like they ran the 03 Santa Cruz contest as Kenny S and I saw with the backing they had,,,,,It will be a First Class EventRED wrote
Good luck.
Hope you get it right. No one has to tell you that a lot rides on KSUSA's commitment to host the event.
that will be envied by all who attend or just observe...
The sponsors then ...and what I read from this year far outdo our comps here in Aust...where we struggle but still get 4 comps a year together...on a shoestring budget
Good luck guys
I will definately be there
Tony
Love that "greenroom" feeling...(don't panic I finally found it)..... good ole' winki on a good day

Hi Guys and Gals
Just saw the tentitive dates for Santa Cruz Worlds which i really want to attend but having been there a couple of years ago (San Francisco) is December the best time to have the comp? Its going to be very cold!!! and is very near Christmas to haul over from OZ but if they are the only dates that can be organised then cool!!! Just want to know why December and not September/October bit warmer still good weather systems for swell etc.

Irish,
As a follow up note to Scott's point, sometimes in the late Fall, early Winter there are very large areas of high pressure that seem to park over Nevada (a few hundred miles East). That means mild to strong offshore winds and warm/sunny days. One December when I lived there I actually marked my calender for each day it was offshore. The result was three c o n s e c u t i v e weeks of offshore winds. I still have that calender in the garage. We will only need a weeks worth

Santa Cruz 2006
Jon!! How can January be dryer than December? Is it really that different up there? I can almost always count on January being the wettest nastiest stormiest month by far. After New Year's Day, that is. The weather is always glorious on New Year's so all the people freezing their buns off back east can watch us basking in the glow of perfect SoCal blue skies during the Rose Parade ...
This year being the exception to all previous weather patterns tho ... crazy wet stuff falling all over. More than a foot of rain. Crazy. What's a desert country to do but flood and slide all over?n Almost guarantees we'll be dry for the next 8 years.
Anyway, you can't predict anything about the weather that far in advance. Here's my best guess: Odds are good there will be waves anywhere from 3 to 12 feet. Periods of sunshine during the day, darkness at night. Generally moderate winds and the kelp beds help to keep things smooth if the wind does happen to kick up, offshore winds if Brad's good karma holds. Full suits will be called for regardless. That's all you need to know. That and to plan on being there ... !

The dates for this contest are just about perfect IMO.
The fall always has some of the cleanest conditions of the year. Do forget that many of the best, cleanest, Mavericks swells have occured Nov. to Dec.
The swells typically are either a local short interval swell as a storm passes or a long, clean, 17 sec swell generated in the north pacific at an angle of 285 to 295.
Likelihood that the swell would be below head high would be low. A more likely scenario would be a moderate north swell that would keep the lane and PP at least in the head high realm for the entire week. Lack of swell is less of a concern as early winter storms. These storms ussually pass within a day or two and are typically followed by offshore winds. A typical late fall weather pattern means high pressure sitting in interior Nevada causing offshore flow at the coast between weather fronts.
Santa Cruz is great destination.
Within an drive there are numerous surf spots that vary from right hand points (at least four) to miles of beach break some it of very high quality at Moss and SF., also gnarly rock reef breaks can go off. Most of time there is some place within a hour's drive that is surfable.
There are so many other things that can be done before or after to the contest. Skiing or snowboarding is option. The nearest ski resort to Santa Cruz is about 3.25 hours away, tahoe is 4 hours. Early season conditions are always a guess but at least one or two resorts will be open. This year they had good skiing by that time. Accomadations and rental gear is easily available
Roadtrips can be done easily from Santa Cruz to incredible places like
Big Sur - starts one hour south of SC
Yosemite Valley -Hiking/camping/resort - can be done in a long day, 3 hours driving oneway
Napa Valley - Food, wine, spas - 2 hour drive from SC
San Francisco - Shopping/museums, culture - 1 hour from SC
Monterey - aquarium/golf - 45 minutes form SC
Locally the sant cruz mountains have great hiking, mountain biking, and the mystery spot.
Santa Cruz is a college town and so the bar scene is decent. Several clubs in the area are big enough so fairly well known bands come to town frequently. Concert venues in the bay area are about 1 hour away and there is always lots of music around. Tickets can be bought online easily
I think the location and venue are hard to beat for the 2006 titles.
OK so the water could be 80 degress

Thank you Mayor Sid for the tour guide to Santa Cruz. Although I think your timing is off with distance to the ski slopes. It takes at least 4 hours to get to most ski resorts from here.
Darcy As always you are so right. There is no 100% prediction of the weather. But check the records of Northern Cal. weather in January. You will find that most years at least two weeks will be dry compared to the wet weather of December. Indian summer is in the fall and no one denies this, well, we have a brief drying out period in January. Of course there are exceptions to the rule, but I think you will find them exceptions.
