Sorry to hear that Scott... get better! It's been since Jan. 23rd for me, with a long road ahead... this hasn't helped my personality much!

Don and I were at S____ C___k one misty AM thinking about heading out to join the only guy out there... we walked up to a headless seal.

Right about then, the only guy out came in and said he saw big whitey, and warned us not to head out.

So... he could have been bs'ing but who were we to judge!

It is funny how much water time WC and GR gets, but not just down the road.

i drove past Gazos with a friend one time and it was absolutely firing. i convinced him to drive and check ano before we paddled out because i was so freaked. by the time we got back to gazos the wind switched and the waves went to crap. i was soooooooooo stoked.

speaking of the san mateo coast....i will be moving back in july, very excited to return. going to santa clara and living in the nearby vicinity (campbell, los gatos?? any suggestions?).

looking forward to surfing that stretch again for some years to come.

Don't let all these stories freak you out; it's part of the mystique of the area north of Santa Cruz. Stay around town and you'll have a great time and no sightings, for sure. Give me a PM if you'd like to hook up for a surf when you're up here.

And to the rest of you guys and your Whities stories in my backyard--YOU ALL FREAKED ME OUT!! Thanks for nothing...

We have our sharkies too, Scott. I've been chased out of the water more than once surfing the beaches between Watsonville and Moss. And in Mexico and in the Channel Islands and........

Shark stories are best when served to nonsurfers. I love it when their eyes get realy big.

Scott, "stolen bread is the sweetest." You're in their territory taking their waves and getting away with it. That adds the special edge that makes surfing so sweet for you NorCal guys.

I wasn't really intending this to be a thread on "Great Whites of the San Mateo Coast". It is fitting, however, since I had spotted waves there on the way down earlier that weekend but couldn't convince my normally adventerous friend to even go look at it. We surfed junky Waddel with 15 others.

It wasn't Scott W. I saw, I would have stopped to say hello and get the surf report. Still wondering who the mystery surfer (with the heart of a lion, or maybe orca?) was.

As for surf along the San Mateo Coast, it's very hard to get it good. Too much wind all summer, too much size all winter, more and more people searching for waves around there. The biggest problem is that you have either shifting sand-never the same place twice, or raw rocks without sand to smooth them out. It also seems like there are more sharks around the rocks, but I don't have any stories of my own to back that up.

One of my all time favorite drives.HY-1 south.Changed quite a bit in the last 40+ yrs though.H moon bay's gotten a bit crowded with traffic,but past that point it's magical.
Generally go thru [san mateo]that area very early,try and get to waddell by first light.Aways check the swell and tides.If it's right then firstlight is the deal.
Blundered a few times also.Hmmmm it's decent here,could be better down the road....

Generally isn't...but it all works out over the yrs.
