Juan,

There's been some discussion/debate of 360s on this site over the years - try the forum topic (under contests) for "What Judges Are Looking For"

viewtopic.php?t=1443

Bottom line: keep trying! If that doesn't work, removing your fins might!

Pura Vida!

Malaga....... I do them all the time. I get more "that was a cool trick you just did" from guys in the water then I do doing anything else. A loose board helps. My style of Kbing is that most of the time, I sit high on my knees. I seem to be liter on my board. When I decide i`m going to spin it, I lean forward alittle and twist and throw my ass in the direction I want to spin it. Also, a loose board helps.
Hope this helps

360's

Man, that Tee was a crowd pleaser, once he told me, why surf the wave when you can do trick's, he loved that oooh and aaah factor.

360

Post by DARRYL/2112 »

when i go rights i push hard on the back the fin pops out of the and spins fast,i ride a singlefin stinger so its easy for me i tried it on my twin fin,no way could i do that.going lefts i aim the board upwards andtwistmy body so the board follows.i prefer single fin stingers.as my wife would say stop living in the past.ha!

a 360 is easy a el rollo is something else.

I hate 360s

360's look silly and are not a functional manoeuvre. If your surfing is about "oohs and aahs" coupled with an "why surf when you can do tricks" attitude - you wouldn't get much attention from other watermen - at least where I surf in OZ. It would be viewed as a wasted wave. A contest 360 has never scored well either - I don't know about US - an air-reverse yes - but that for me is a functional move to ensure that the surfboard lands back where the action is and not behind the wave. The biggest scorers in the air are the huge no-grab no-reverse babies like AI pulled at La Jolla last year to clinch the RipCurl Pro Search. But I digress - I agree that 360s feel good and that is the most important thing I suppose - I just don't think they enhance the wave-surfing itself. Bit old school I know but hey I come from the power surfing generation.

I "ooh and aah" at Sparrow or Gav et al pulling into a mindless pit - and I do love a massive controlled air. Some may equate air with 360s in their functionality - I suppose an aerial does not improve the actual riding of the wave - but from where I stand it takes surfing into a new sphere and thus enhances the art of surfing. Going higher and higher has always been an elementary drive of mankind as opposed to going round and round on the spot.

Then again tail slides are relatively unfunctional but feel fantastic - and there is a fine line between a 360 and a big tail slide - but tail slides tend to throw up a lot of spray and make a big mess of the face and look spectacular and are less controlled than a spinner. A carving 360 is more functional I suppose - but a litttle bit pointless.

My twenty cents worth - interested what others have to say. Apologies to you spin-heads out there.

go shaunsey do u stand up or sumthn on ur surf board... this is a kneeboard site.
i find the easiest 360 is wen u kind of do a mid face super hard bottom turn with extra punch, kicks out tons of spray , just not off the bak of the wave.
to do them on the throwing lip like a 360 floater you have to slow it down a little cause ur board will be looser in the lip. a grab sometimes helps.
try to spot ur landing or where ur going to go next.
you can also try the vertical 360, where you do a deep bottom turn (key to most stylish manouveres) and approach the lip vertically, projecting half your board above the wave then snapping ur board towards the whitewater and dropping back in. kind of like a reverse re-entry, kelly sl8r was doing them a few years ago pretty well for a stand up. we can do them faster tho.

if you get boared with 360s on the face , take them to the air with a grab.. then with no grab now thats style

Now that hurts "go do a standup"

Mal some of those 360s you are doing would blow my mind - why don't you come over to Phillip Island in November and show us how it is done. Floating 360s across the lip - vertical 360 snap backs - insane. And the midface bottom turn spray thrower - nuts. Thats if I actually thought you could do them. If you can - I think we'd all like to see that sort of progressive kneeriding.

I have seen the Simpson brothers ruin a great turn by finishing it off with a 360 - but as I said it is not the sort of functional surfing I appreciate.

Mal, your 360s do sound awesome if not somewhat fanciful. And what did I type that brought about your hurtful vehemence. I do ride standup from time to time ... there I've said it...

Maybe next time read my post too.

sorry i guess i did get a little carried away but i didnt say "go do a stand up" i said do u stand up.
anyway i agree that 360s can ruin an otherwise good wave if there put in the wrong place, but some types of 360 can be done with no speed at all or when dropping in.. when a turn would just bog.

i havent described anything that i havent allready done at least 3 times, exept maby the 360 airs. but its not like thats all i can do , yes you would be impressed.

hope to see you in nz in 09 for the worlds.
2 years to practice a fresh new move.

ps wots your favourite-most impressive manover, other than a barrell ?

I guesss i`ll never be a contest or a good Kber then. I like doing 390/spinners. I`ll do them anywhere/anytime. The right time or the wrong time. It`s all good. So if I spin a 180 and continue on backwards, points off ??
