Hey Dan -

we can hang - I'm going to be coming up midday Thursday, so we'll snag the best camping sites and tell Jon he missed the best surf on Friday morning!

And Jon & Nora are dynamite cooks ... between all the good food promised for this trip, I'm just going to eat my way through the weekend!
I'm really looking forward to this gathering!

Jalama Camp and comp.

Post by barry »

Greetings everyone, here is the most likely comp format for Jalama Beach
This is an example... if we have 24 kneelos who want to have a go. there would be 4 heats of 6 riders (3 north/3 south) heats will be 30 minutes long (at least) depending on # of riders participating and the conditions. top 2 riders from each heat advancing to 45 minute final. There is NO entry fee  this is an Expression Session 8) It has been made clear to us by the park ranger that a beach permit is required for ALL Contests and they cost $400. so the only $ changing hands between kneelos will be Donations for the BBQ on sat. The cost to participate in the surf off is your time..(judging) every rider will judge a heat. example heat#1 will be judged by the riders inheat #3. heat#2 will be scored by riders in heat#4 etc. etc. anyone not qualifying for the final will have an opportunity to judge it   This event is open for the positive input of anyone who would like to be involved :!: any good  or :?:
Judging criteria;rides will be scored on the usual 1-10 scale. this Expression Session format is ideal for CHARGING... Big Lippers/ Aerials/ Insane Barrels should be given BIG Scores. distance of WAVE ridden is a factor, although grovelling in the whitewash all the way to the beach shouldn't help a rider advance. This event is about going for it and having a Good time with people who like to kneeride waves. Big Turns Bigger Barrels and Big Smiles should be our motto.....Hope to see everyone interested in a Good time at Jalama

No problem on coordinating the water activities at Jalama
Mike is coordinating the camping aspect at least as much as we can.
and the BBQ maybe Jon seems to be the guy with the golden spatula.
I am planning on arriving on wed 5/7 and if you can make it Dan we could do a pre bbq on thurs nite since you might have to leave on fri.
as for the vitamin L.... :? Hopefully everyone will remember to bring their supplements of choice  fiber could be the call for anyone who feels abit elderly  .... and for those that feel like skipping Please do. (personally I Love the feeling it generates) we could even fit it into the comp format where instead of being in a hurry and running into the water we could all skip :!: It may be difficult with flippers on but it will sure make for some good watching. might even add some bonus points for the person with the best or funniest style 8)

Hey, Barry - I think you're on to something! Flipper-footed Relay Races, Skip to Tarantulas and Back contest and other fun activities. Sounds like you moonlight as a Cruise Director on your off time!

I'll be bringing down some nicely seasoned oak wood to leave for Saturday's bbq...since I can't be there, I still want to contribute. We will do something nice for Thursday nite for all of you who plan on hitting Jalama early. Maybe a seafood feast with sushi/maki/sashimi and some other grilled goodies. You just never know.

We'll just keep touching bases and this Gathering will be the best. Everyone bring your still and digi cameras and video cams. Anyone shooting 16mm?

Also, any musicians in the group? We can plan on some sing-a-longs around the campfire. Tune up your guitars, ukeleles, banjos (leave the accordians at home, thank you). If everyine brings a 2-3 chunks of firewood we should be able to have a nice central campfire every night. Since I'm driving down solo in my 'surf assault vehicle' (Quest mini van) I'll bring as much wood as I can to leave for the weekend.

Now all we need is for Mike S to order up some nice weather, warm water and nonstop, peeling 6 foot sets and its a GO!!!!

Barry - what day are you doing the comp? I just noticed that Sunday, May 9 is Mothers Day so I'm outta there by Sat night (but I'll come up TH). Also, this thing started as a North/South grudge match - we should figure out some way of determining a winner for bragging rights. Then we scrounge for some trophy - howbout we call it the "Pt. Conception Cup?"

The Pt. Conception Cup sounds good to me. I would hope that we are going to do the grudge match on Sat. That way I not stressing on packing Suday morning.
Also, who's bringing kids with them? I'm going to bring my two boys(3 & 5) and am hoping there will be a few extra grommets for them to play with.
See you guys on Thurs.

WOW This gathering lookin' to be very cool. I like the "grass roots" vibe. Barry's format for the north/south expression session sounds good. It would be fun to judge...... try not to be biased.
I'll just be coming home from a surf trip to Costa Rica and Nicaragua Sat., May 8th so, I'll be unable to attend.
Jon we will surf together again! Have fun all. Wayne

I supply the paint! I buy it by the gross. Some kneelo shaper should pick me up as a consulted. I have many Ideas. Like Henry Ford said "You can have it any color you want, as long as its Black" I also do hair, please read quote above! Your friend,
Good olde Ler.

Hello everyone out there in cyberspace :)
here is an update on the Sat. Expression Session. We already have 20 entries which is Outstanding considering this thing is still about 6 weeks away. I am hoping to have a few more entrants so the #'s will get a little more even. so far about 3/4 of the challengers are driving UP from the south. Whats going on with the Northern contingent ? haven't heard from anyone in the Frisco area  Got a couple of folks coming down from Santa Cruz area STOKED on that!!! If some of you folks don't want to rough it (tent camp) you can always rent a motor home Jalama has electrical hook ups. Also there are several people bringing their families so no excuse on the marital commitment end. After all it is mother's day weekend and what mom in her right mind wouldn't want to go camping on moms day :P no matter where you got to come from It will be worth the drive this place is BEAUTIFUL... miles of beach to walk, holding hands/ starry nights/ camp fires not to mention all the skipping that will be done while wearing flippers  anyone who hasn't sent me a PM please do so soon it will help with the setting up process. Thanks
Barry
