Yes indeedy--spring/flex. I had the opportunity to handle Velo in his shop during that time period and it was very stiff snappy flex. Think trampoline or diving board with proper timing and reflexes add that nearly entire board flex/snap to terminal velocity/wave speed and you really had something. Not many could duplicate. But literally, speed/acceleration that the eye could not follow. It looked like he was in two places at once (start of bottom turn and start of cut back) with a blurred trail in between. And this was a long arc between[/quote]

All this and has anyone noticed how long a drop of water can "hang" on the edge of an umbrella without falling? So many unique properties of water that I wonder if the falling slab of a tube doesn't get some of its shape from air compressing and exiting constantly out the open end? Would go a long way to explaining why off-shore winds generally = hollow surf, even at places that rarely get hollow.

But surfing itself is a romantic journey, so how could the waves we flirt with and drive miles to see hold anything BUT romantic sirens calling us ever closer to jagged reef?
Funny but science only sees what it decides to look at, and the preferred symbolic language as clear as heiroglyphics to most of us. But a poet rarely misses anything life offers.
A simple test:
On a table placed on a beach in perfect view of feathering breakers are two glasses of wine, one red and one white. Tell the scientist to go up and have a drink and admire the view and he'll choose one, leaving when his glass is empty. send the poet and he'll not come back. When you grow tired of waiting you go get him. Both glasses are empty and he asks "Have you brought more drink? Send for supper too!"
I admire science but prefer poetry.

well 3=3 and 4=4 but viewed from below, and observing the shimmering arc of surfboard on rail turn, both would appear as 2, assuming all the observer notes is numbers of skegs. Does that mean they're equal?

men of philosophy

consider the the numeral 0, zero - which comes to us from the sanskrit word shunyata - what is there without it ? yet exactly what is it? the nature of reality as "dependant arising" upon another or apperance without findable concrete entity as its absolute source - selflessness - "freedom" from its limitations and fears - poetry and science working together

got the vid sparrow and friends on friday - what a vibe did spread thru the household - even the four year old girl loved it - "its a good swell dad"!

saturday - 3 to 4 ft speed trains at cylinders (2nd carpark 13th beach) to celebrate its arrival and let off some inspired steam

in the ancient east some monks discussing nature in regards to a flags movement - some were heard to say its the wind in the flag that produce movement - the others were of the opinion that it was the object "flag" in the wind that produced movement - a wandering monk entered the room, quietly listened to the debate and then remarked

in actuality it is your minds that are flapping

the debate ended there - the monk went on to become quite famous - a poet with a talent for observation (scientific expressionism)

evolution

Rain falls from far above me,

Wind whispers out of sight..

I soar so discontently,

Like a restless bird, in flight.

hart.

Never let your mind sit still..it will end up at fat as your donkey if it does.

ah my good men of poetry and philosophy - wax and hart

REST IN NATURAL GREAT PEACE (non conceptual awarness)

THIS EXHAUSTED MIND

BEATEN HELPLESS BY KARMA AND NEUROTIC THOUGHTS

LIKE THE RELENTLESS FURY OF THE POUNDING WAVES

IN THE INFINITE OCEAN OF SAMSARA

Rest in natural great peace

tibetan lama - Nyoshul Khenpo Rinpoche

samsara - sanskrit - endless rounds of uncontrolled birth and death - one life human next donkey - cause - tooo many thoughts! thinking by nature leads one astray! non conceptual awarness keeps one concentrated on the positive - thus good karma - dont believe me!!! - look very hard at the world - more negative than positive - but as yoda said to luke 'THE POSITIVE SIDE OF THE FORCE IS STRONGER THAN THE DARK SIDE' so a little good karma manages to keep a lot of bad karma in check - lucky for us eh! "imagine" more positive than neg - like John Lennon

intresting watching baden in vid as a quad surfer - i understand parallel v vertical approach much better now - cant say im a parallel approach guy myself - somwhere in between and less skillful at it

my next board will be rounded pin - theres something about farrer and that rounded pin!!

night night

I seem to have that donkey's ass firmly wedged in my gut...like a pergola over the playgrond....so to speak.....comes in handy as a weight (like flywheel) to keep the motion in progress

and there may be something about his thruster..let alone the double wings.

or is it simply soliloquy?

i thought you hated fins!

the pintail comment came from the desire to see kneeboarding style and skill as not totally reliant on number of fins - which i think is steens thought as well - or has the tri/thruster theory become a dogma!

after 20 years or so as a kneelo i consider myself reasonably well skilled but no champion - i dont ride with a parallel approach but i ride a quad that is no less loose than my old tri - or has not restricted my surfing in terms of ability to turn on demand - i enjoy the stability of a quad but perhaps i would achieve this with a pintail tri

after studying some sites i came to the conclusion that the fish tail was the tube wave riders tool of choice - the sparrow vid made me think differently in terms of simons tube riding with a pintail - perhaps you could elaborate on his tail choice and wings

and soliloquy - good word - but context? - when you post im listening
