The final was 30 minutes long. Not sure if they caught every wave riden on this video, but if not, pretty close.

Great job Caveman!!!!
Does that include the wave Baden got right after the final horn? That was one of the best riden waves I've ever seen!!!!!!

Now we can began the debate, based on your review of the finals footage, do you agree with the judges decision as regards the results. Matty sure is ripping but Gavin definitely pulls the biggest snaps in my book. Barry is the only one pulling multiple big turns on the same wave. Baden only got one wave.

My vote- the judges got it right. What do you guys think??

Hi Tom

I've only watched it once..... with an eye to fluidity and risk. - rather than points for move.

With that in mind I would have given it to someone else.

But I think I have the surfers mixed up.

Plus I am most definitely not a judge.

Let me watch it again :)

I saw the final and watched the video and still think it's too close to call. Even though I was pulling hard for Barry to win one for the USofA, I'm glad Gavin got the nod. He killed it all contest, every heat. I think the judges acknowledged that with the decision. Big moves definitely ruled - and that's the way it should be.

okay watched the vid again, this is what I saw: I just noted down the major turns, the one's I think are important. Before I start I have to admit I wanted Baden to win, then an Australian - preferably one riding a Parkes :)

Wave 1) Matt G nice bottom turn, nice top turn, nice bottom nice top turn but stalls here as wave fills up and paddles to keep on wave

2) Barry on left - falls on the re-o

3) barry second wave small and nothing much

4) Gavin coleman nice bottom trun, falls on the reo

5) Baden - biggest wave of the heat???????two nice snapss off the top : as an aside, watch the speed out of Baden's first bottom turn and tell me what you see :)

6) Barry nice snap, nice forceful roundhouse cutty

7) Gavin coleman hard snap off the top, more under the lip than Badens, couple more hard turns

8 ) Matt hard off the bottom straight into a high risk re-o, straight into another bottom turn, then a high risk re-0 lots of board above the wall -and falls - could have been the highest scoring wave except for the fall

9) Barry small nondescript wave with some unladlylike full cutty snaps thingos

10) Matt gets stuck behind the foam, does a foam bounce, some nice hard turns later, nothing high risk

11) Barry_ same as his last wave but quicker and faster

12) Gavin_ great high risk re-o off the first bottom turn, some reverse direction coming down, handles it at the bottom - best re-o of the final - but that''s alll - couldn't call it a heat winner

13) Matt fast great snap off the top, good grinding cutty, then again but we miss the rest of this wave as the camera pans to:

14) Barry- high risk re-o good vertical off the first bottom turn, grinds into the second re-o - but the wave goes full - at same place where Matts first wave stalled - with these two moves I'd call it the best wave of the heat.

15) Matty- medium sized wave - rips three high snaps off - continues down the line - great wave - too mechanical tho?

Conclusions

If Barry had a good backup wave to follow up his wave 14 then I'd give the final to him.

Matt seemed to have the best all round waves. I'd call him the winner.

Gavin's re-o in wave 12 is definitely the best re-o of the heat - but that's all there is in this wave. This is the equivalanet of MG wave no 8 - though of course Matt falls.

Gavin's wave no 7 is one of the best 3 waves in the final, though I'd call it the equal of Matt's 15.

And Baden, ... oh for where for art though Baden :(

of copurse if I watch the vid again I'll see it all differently :) :) :) :) :)

there you have it from an armchair judge

Having watched EVERY heat for the last two days, this was the 1st one that surprised me. (I had it MattG-Barry-Gavin... Gigs had it MattG-Gavin-Barry). However, in retro-spec, i see where I was mistaken:

1) One of Matty's best waves was the 1st wave of the final.
The judges had been giving higher scores as the heats wound down all week (Just ask poor Jamie, who had Gigs stone-cold beaten in the Masters Final.. only to see Gigs get a decent inside wall with 45 seconds remaining, go Ballistic, and snatch the title.)

2) Gavin had seduced the judges all week.
Forget about wave counts and high scores... NO ONE was surfing like Gavin, Period. He was like Kelly Slater... every time he paddled out, the judges perked up, hoping to see some magic... and Gavin never disappointed them. Gavin won every heat in both Divisions and the Team Challenge.... and I doubt one was even close.

3) Gavin saved the biggest move of the contest for the final.
Stuff of legends... stuff of Champions.

Hey Headwax-
BTW.. had the final been 30 seconds longer, Baden would be Champ.
He waited for a giant 2nd set wave... it came at 30:30... and he absolutely SMASHED it.

ahh yes

I keep hearing this saying in my head (so often proved by small middle eastern dictators) "he who dares..... err loses"

Baden did the similar high risk thing in 2002 worlds - he went and sat down the beach away from the judges and the other surfers - had a left hander all too himself.

Happened I was filming Baden in 2002 world's final. He took off on a huge left hander (well was big for the final :) ) meanwhile the commentators were screaming that Kyle was geting this great barrel - every eye in the place was on Kyle -except my video camera - meanwhile Baden jams a huge bottom turn, wacks the lip in this rib breaking closeout, comes down with the lip, lands in about three inches of water, dissapears in the foam (can't remember what happened next :( as I have brain damage) he may have come out of the foam.

Meanwhile Kyle is still in his barrel. He comes out or it closes out just as Baden finsihes his wave. There was no way the judges saw both waves. I bet you most of them were watching Kyle's wave because he was in front of them, but also the commentators were screaming about his barrel while it was happening. IE directing the crowd's attention toward Kyle.

Kyle won the final deservedly.

But there is a lot to be said for having a no comentator final.
Unless the judges are deaf or are robots.

What say you? :) :)

The way I saw it after watching the video available was Gavin won it hands down. He seemed to be the only one in my opinion that looked to be really going for it & taking the risk. I have seen Gavin surf here in Australia & thought his surfing was was limited to the waves that where available. I was suprised to see him fall on that 1st wave as that is what ive seen him do with so much ease.
Baden's wave is a good wave but he does nothing that is on rail or radical. I thought his surfing is flat & skippy, his turns seemed to not hold rail where the others stayed firm.
Matty seemed to have it in the bag if he had of handled that reo! (only if!!!)
Barry seemed to be going pretty good but looked to be lacking something but a fair contender may I say. Would have been so cool to have a Yank win.
Baden has been there done that!
Gav is the champ & there should not be anyone who could say he doesnt deserve it.
But who am I
