i gotta say i was super impressed that KSUSA was able to get The Lane the way they did for the world titles.

i didn't believe they could clear the water the way they did, till i saw it. 8)

i doubt such a famous/localised spot could be controlled by kneeboarders that well, anywhere else in the world.

Gentleman,

I love the passion here! :D We are working on ideas.

The reality is that we need to be able to secure locations where many factors have to be considered and successfully managed. We/KSUSA have to work within the schedules of other surfing clubs. You would be supprised how many school, club, competitive surfing associations etc. etc. are having contests every weekend up and down the coast. We also need to be able to reserve judging, scaffolding, fee collection, and be able to committment to locations well in advance. Insurance, water patrol, beach permits, blah blah blah..These are all contest organization realities.

From a surfing standpoint, we need to consider how wind sensitive is a spot? We normally need to hold heats all day long. Is the spot statistically exposed to swell during that month?

We also need to consider if the locale offers a variety of eating, lodging, travelling services for the surfers and their families. Airports, rent-a-cars etc. From budget to deluxe.

We would love to get something down south. We are looking at options. Santa Cruz has come up time and time again as a place that has offered us the best combinations of all named above logistics.

We are open to ideas and love the feedback. We will keep all aspects in mind and work toward another successfull event.

Speaking as a private person and not a representative of the KSUSA, anyone who wants to secure a venue and develop a team to run a contest would be very welcome. It is likely that the KSUSA would give you a wholehearted endorsement and help anyway we can.

K38- somebody go for it. Get the venue and I can get you in touch with a crew to run the contest for you.
Blacks- same answer
Bolsa- same answer, however keep in mind that a good contest venue offers good waves ALL DAY, not just in the morning.
Trestles- same answer. the Trestels spots are bid out to the highest bidder annually in August for the following year. Supposedly, Lowers goes for over $10K per day.

I challenge somebody to move from talk to action and INITIATE a contest in So Cal. I'm happy to provide any advice, contacts, etc, etc to help. Honestly, I'm a bit burn out on contest orgainzing and would be stoked if a new team stepped up to run a So Cal event. PM me if somebody wants to talk.

It would be great to have a summer or fall contest in So Cal and a winter event in Nor Cal. That would be a real step forward for our group. However, Don, Mark, Jack and I don't have the energy to pursue two events per year. We need somebody else to take the bull by the horns and make it happen in So Cal.

Site suggestion Ocean Side....They use to hold the Stubby's Pro there. Between the Harbor and Pier there is a lot of wave. South Jetty can be ridden all day.

I dont think what Tom was talking about had to do so much with the venue, but more with the people that can make it happen.

I dont see that anyone has put their hand up!

Folks I am starting a new thread for contest venues in which you can post ideas to it after you have contacted the people who will reserve the dates and give you the cost for the venue. Not sure who this is, maybe city council.
I would be glad to show up and surf with you guys. If there is anything I can do from the East Side here, let me know. Maybe PR releases through e-mail to media outlets or something.
New thread will be under the CONTESTS forum
