 might have a shave today w`rus, feeling a little too furry.
G`day folks, no waves lately so the next best subject for photos is Billy.
Leaving for P.I. on Sunday-got a 4.3 steamer, hood, gloves and  booties and still a little concerned about the cold water.

Post by Doc Turbo »

has anyone ever tried out this series of cameras.

seems they focus on underwater cameras, and relatively inexpensive.

G`day Doc, my first ever waterproof camera and 2nd digital camera is a Vivitar ViviCam 6200W. It`s the yellow one on the Sealife link.
Look almost identical except for the colour-mine was only rated to 60feet.
I found that the images were hit & miss. The AUTO setting rarely worked well, but i did get good results using the SPORT setting.
Only had it a few months, in the water maybe 4 or 5 times for a total of 10-12 hours.
Shutter button used to stick and d`loading to my computer was getting slower & slower.
It stopped working altogether, and was still under warranty, but looked like a hassle and at least a small expense sending it back.
So i pulled it apart myself. Salt water was getting in through the shutter button, leaving salt and corrosion over the electronics and travelling down the side to the USB port.
It`s possible i didn`t clean it out properly after use. Just don`t know.
Other down sides to the Vivitar--no optical zoom.
slow shutter speed.
Had a look at some reviews recently for models i`d seen in shops or heard about.
One of the reasons i bought the Fujifilm(same price range), is that it has a good range of shutter speeds.
I`m a total amateur when it comes to cameras and photography, though i`ve picked up some handy info through this forum, the net and walking around shops.
Mighty grateful to everyone, as i`m loving learning new things post middle age. :D

Olympus

Post by Doc Turbo »

Mick

Thanks the input. I have a GoPro Digital Camera, its fun, and convenient, but obviously not a long term solution. It has paid for itself over and over though, cheap at 100 bucks or so.

My friends have the Olympus 1030SW and that seems to be the right solution, now if I can figure an save, convenient way to keep it handy, during a surf, with no wet suit. for me I want a camera that I can use, during a surf, without a special swim out over the reef.

there are many brands out there in the low end of the market

here is a page that shows a range of shapes available that are imediately ready for the water
http://shop.helmetcameracentral.com/all ... tersports/

it shows a GoPro Hero ... which could be what Doc has

the Oregon Scientific ATC2K (around $200aust) and the the ATC3K have been on the net for a while now and there are a few sellers here in Australia that stock it
and sometimes across the counter

you may find it second hand at a cheaper price
but could be buying something that's had a hard life

I think the video quality borderline and only just ok
... shame it wasn't better resolution with a 25p option

WOW store did have something like this a while ago
http://www.helmetcamera.com/acart/agora ... d=MR&xm=on
I have no suggestions for a water housing solution

the split systems are more pro and probably better with more options
you can select video quality as a trade-off to time
change the camera head and lenses for obvious depth and distance reasons
the smaller camera is better on the helmet but does require a pocket for the recorder

see the VIO POV.1 on the first page above

for more split system ideas ... and from a Aust outlet
http://www.helmetcamera.com.au/products.htm

these are all low and entry level stuff so don't expect HD
but workable units ... mpeg4 will probably be the norm
this is not a recomendation for any of the above
I just did a quick google to present a few links and pictures

Gath Sports sell the Oregon ATC camera mounted to a Gath helmet. They're currently out of stock waiting for an upgraded model. You can check out more info at the link below.

He came home one morning with the bottom quarter of his tongue hanging by a couple of milimeters. Healed up well.
More than likely checking out rubbish tins and found a tin of something irresistable.
Tough little fellow, took it in his stride, always happy.

Ya gotta love the Aussie dog.
