H2 FCS TEST DRIVE
Moderator: Moderator
A picture is worth.....test driving the H2 large, found that they took the rails out of the picture by pivoting on the fin and then caused a longer transition back to plane and then to the other rail (fin) causing a long arc cutback. I like the Probox approach of the inserts and allowing the possibility of fine tuning the camber.

If you're after an alternative to FCS then have a look at these.
http://www.shapers.com.au/category128_1.htm
I've used the FCS LB1 thruster fins which are composite core in some pretty decent sized waves and they are still in one piece.
So maybe the Shapers composite construction which I put the link up for will be sturdier.

One day you'll find me washed up on the shoreline. I'll still be usefull. Your Budgie will love me.

As usual, you guys blow me away with the in-depth knowledgeable discussion from a seemingly harmless post! How you guys get time (and surf) to play around with degrees of cant, etc is mind blowing. Im lucky that my board is in the car with possibly 4 of some sort of black fins still on in when I get to the parking lot! LOL (Where did I put the freaking wax!! What??....... were is my wettie??)
Quick, lets paddle out before we come to our senses!!
That is why I posted my question on here, thanks guys. Back to my stock fins and have a better knowledge of how my board works.poorboy0007 wrote:As usual, you guys blow me away with the in-depth knowledgeable discussion from a seemingly harmless post! I must admit I don't understand most of the design threads. This one I found interesting....
Recently I changed the fins on my 5'8" quad from M5s to these Cdrive fins (gx as trailers). I really didn't think there would be a difference, however these fins have given the board a Jeckle and Hyde personality. In the mushy stuff I get a lot more drive, which was what I was hoping for (Dr Jeckle).
Next surf was a point break, then I found Mr Hyde hiding in the board, the board is now loose and fast, every turn is an adventure in acceleration.
Punchy beach breaks (Mr Hyde is on steroids)... my confidence has gone up a couple of notches, except when the dreaded bounce starts, then things can go haywire very quickly. All in all these fins are great.

my surfing always haywire...I wonder what it would do for me...at $90, I'll have to wait till we finally get to surf together and I'll do a swap in the water with you with my hippy wood veneer Parkes.
hope you've got those wicked purple ones - they'll match my extremities in winter.
or maybe put them on one side only to get a true comparison!!!!

Hi Mark,
I got the medium green ones. I really didn't think that yellow and purple would go to well. I'll let you know if I am heading up the coast this weekend.
Hi AB ,
I did ask them about Quad sets, Cdrive are looking into to the quad set-up at the moment. I had to buy thruster set which means I have one fin resting in a draw at home.

Interesting the fins are selected according to rider weight. I still think board shape plays an important role, no matter what fins your using. A board with rocker will turn tighter in the pocket than a flatter board IMHO. I'm not up on rail designs so much though.

Very intriguing fins, they seem to combine elements of both high aspect ratio and low aspect ratio fins, maybe that explains their schizofinic tendencies. Keep us posted.

Interesting concept. I like it.bdwqld wrote:I must admit I don't understand most of the design threads. This one I found interesting....

Here are a couple of snaps of the Cdrive fins in my board.
album_showpage.php?pic_id=24590
album_showpage.php?pic_id=24590&mode=prev#TopPic
One thing I have noticed when taking these (pictures), is that the trailing edge of the front fin overlaps the leading edge of the back fin.
I was wondering if this would create a virtual long flat fin for more drive?
Any thoughts

generally you may think that more base length in any fin or fin set will produce a rail effect while the board speed is fast and there is no side slide
perhaps like channels near the rail
of more interest is what the fin will do when side force is applied
if the Cdrive fin tip where to give and bend away from the force before the trailing fin
does this put the trailing fin into the dominant resultant normal force
!!!
I think I just confused resultant and nominal forces
I guess this may highlight the differences in 4 fin theory
the Dave cluster that is like a split or longer twin fin
and the
Bud or McKee split tail fin - tri style
having the fins further apart may be akin to a longer wheel base and so more stable at speed
the effect of having fin tip flex that is different when the fins are close does seem harder to work out
sorry Byron
that probably doesn't help at all
before I saw your picture
my gut feeling was to have a Cdrive fin in the trailing position
but after seeing the picture I can't rationalise either
eerrr
