What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

No, not really..I don't think that 4 days is too long a break between posts..besides I don't want to be seen as bumping my own thread, as it were

context is the biggest problem when relating @ ksusa
As in life, mate

Have you heard of Joanna Beach past cape Otway on the way to the 12 appostles
Yes, I have been to Johanna and seen the 12 Apostles..beautiful part of the planet

and there i was thinking you were a man of the people - a pub drinker
Someone much smarter than me was once called "A man for all people"..

ps: i think i have a photo of me drinking from something in a brown paper bag on the steps of a monument in Toledo Spain - location is everthing sometimes eh!
Now dorje..why wasn't it from a wine skin? Location is everything sometimes

its all good and in humor
Yes it is, my friend

Off Topic:

You haven't once mentioned Seachange in any post that I've read..has this been intentional?

I thought that it portrayed an enviable part of our vast coastline..complete with waves.

You did watch it didn't you?

(Seachange was a multi-award winning Australian Comedy produced by the ABC and located in Barwon Heads..and it was the best thing that I watched on Television over the 2 years that it ran)

the court house was at Williamstown life saving club in Melbourne (for you trivia bag if needed!)

have you seen David Wellehms detective styled tv movie series yet - he plays Murry Wheelan aide to goverment of Vic minister Mick Molloy - the love interests in both movies so far have been HOT older (early thirties)women - one from those suffering from teenage temptation

- ah...the well matured wine....and the wine glasses the mature mrs keeps for those occasions

Bruce, John S. and Red,
I've been experimenting with my fin set up and have found that for my needs Occy side fins and a TC Red Line center fin work extremely well. There are no more twitchy spots to my board and after killing waves for the past two days I think my adjustment period is over. And Curtis - I hug my Flashpoint every day.
Peace and good waves to all,
Willy Kelly

all the way to the rear on bigger days and in the forward position on smaller days. Hope this helps.

experience = everything (or is it everyone?)

how true, mate

and you could try taking the leading edges off both FCS tabs on your fins..and achieve incremental placement of the centre fin..

and even finer tuning

Kyle Bryant is a classic at this 8)

Mind you..he has even put rail fins in the microwave to get them to curve too..[ and EQ had a few things to say about this :) ]

PC once said that you "Tune your fin(s) to the board first..and then the wave, second.."

good advice huh?

hart

and advice that came from the first guy I knew that marketed the Finbox

15 bloody inches of ADVENTURE

and not to mention the rashvest

As I drove into work today the sun was rising on right, offshores blowing overhead, and Trestles lined up to the left while the Flashpoint is home snug in its bed.

This is going to be a real long day.
Curtis

Have you hugged your Flashpoint today? Will has!

something new perhaps?

Post by hart »

I'm not sure this is the best place for this post..

But it is about a perception of mine//so maybe it just is (more later :?: )

I've been fortunate enough to have just spent some weeks away in a tropical paradise with wonderful waves. And there is no substitute like water-time to make a surfer think.

QUESTION..

Singularly, what is the most salient design feature of a surfboard (knees or not)?

Bottom shape

Outline

Length

Flex

or ALL the other variables?

:)

yeah, yeah..It's all about the way it comes together and we all know that!

But what is a surfer's most important requirement in their next Custom Order?

hart

Is there one and if so What is yours?

hey bruce,
hope the trip was good 8) .
for me the most important design feature is bottom curve.the right curve for the right length, cant go wrong  .
although i guess the most salient design feature would have to be planshape.
without pissing in your pocket most guys coming to you would be listening for your opinion though wouldnt they :) ?

Hey Ross,
also not trying to fill mr harts pockets with p&*#s i have to agree with the second part of your post.Ive got to say when i visited Bruce to put my order in ,apart from the basic planeshape and maybe rail type i thought thats all i needed to know.Wrong!

You know Bruce is a minefield of information involving to the art of boardshaping.

Information i took in quiet easily. Strangely enough i had never after 29 yrs of kneeboarding ever thought about the way water should enter and leave your board.

As Bruce was taking the board off the roof of his car to give to me i couldnt help but notice the bugger looked more excited than i was,so to me you cant but think its a passion. :D

i think it depends on what one wants to change to...if one is looking for a change

the thing most in my mind when i dream up a custom is length...id like a 6'2 for winter waves, ease of paddle and earlier entry

but a shaper may have other ways to obtain these requirements that does not involve so many extra inchs...well four anyway

I have been using the Occys as drive fins on my Quad and they haven't let me down yet. Run GS2 trailers on rear but they got a little squirlly on some bigger set waves in PR this spring. Have a pair of Occy double foils will try them out as trailers on next swell with size.

Adding 'just' an additional four inches to length changes up the entire formula for a board.

As with most things, experience and time in the water will dictate what one wants/needs in a board. I can dial in a board for myself easily since I've been through a ton of boards/designs in my life and. While working at Freeline, I was able to design boards that fit a person's surfing style (John did the refining and shaping).....talk about a dream job for a KBer!

My dad built and raced boats so I grew up in a boat shop and had an early facination with hull design. So I had that understanding when I went into surfing.

So, there's the experience. I know what works for me for the type of surfing I do. The one thing that I would tweak would be bottom rocker - is the board for down the line speed runs on big waves or do I want a board for up and down pivot surfing for all -around conditions. All the other variables - rail design, template, fin palcement, foil - I've got down pat.

Bruce.......I'd dig having the opportunity to surf with you and let you surf my 5 fin. After my surf at 3'-4' Sewer Peak this week, I feel like a 21 y/o ripper again with a magic board. Nothing like schooling the younger kids in the water!
