C.P.Odom,
there's Rugby League, then there's Rugby Union - different rules & different tactics but basically blokes trying to run through each other with a bit of leather and deposit it at the opposite end of the field - loosely related to your Gridiron..........  and then there's a game the Victorians made up when they found they couldn't play either Rugby game, where they mostly kick the ball around and fly up in the air like ballerinas and catch it, that usually is called something like Aerial Ping Pong......oops no I think they call it Aussie Rules     :P :P

On ya MJ, your in to bat next,

Err ... sorry Al, dunnno what happened there. Meant to say Vicco's, specifically them Storm lot, but perhaps the short guy pulling at my leg-hairs distracted me while I was typing.

The difference between the various footy codes lies in their origins. Rugby originated at Rugby School (a public school, which actually means an expensive private school) in Pomgolia when some enterprising chap picked up the ball and ran with it while playing football (soccer). Rugby League is the North Pomgolian working class adaptation of Rugby, very popular on the East coast of Australia. Australian Rules comes from Gaelic Football, a game discovered by Irish bog-dwellers during a bender deep in the distant past. All codes involve plenty of gratuitous violence, but Rugby League is the only one with rules that make sense.

Ok Walruss, my bat as you put it. Here are a couple of points that come to mind.

Firstly by way of background Aussie rules was first played in Melbourne between two private schools Scotch College (my old school) and Melbourne Grammar on 7 August 1858. It was created as a means of keeping the cricket teams fit during winter and the two schools have competed annually ever since. It is thought that it was derived from Rugby with influences from Gaelic football however this point is debated by historians of the game.

Walruss I like your reference to ballerinas in regards to Aussie rules as I think you are quite correct. No other football code can compete with AFL for style and grace. There is a level of finesse and sophistication within the game which is unparalleled in the other codes. 8)

I also concur with RMcKnee that the rules of Rugby League are simple to understand and this allows individuals of all intellectual capacities to play. However the down side to this is it is not a sophisticated game to watch and this is shown by the code’s lack of success within the Australian sporting landscape, as demonstrated below.

Today, with the exception of a couple of pockets on the east coast of Australia the Australian Football League is in essence the religion of the nation. For non Aussies you might think I’m joking but all religions in Australia would kill for anything like the level of attendance the AFL gets.

For a country of 20 odd million AFL makes the top 4 for average sports attendances worldwide, with 38,000, after NFL, the Indian Premier League and the Bundesliga. All these codes are played in countries with populations in excess of 82 million. Not a bad result at all really. NRL has under 17,000 and did not make the ranking list. For total attendances in a calendar year AFL has over 7 million compared to NRL of just over 3 million.

To put it in perspective for our American Angels fans the average attendance for baseball came in at 6th position. Also an interesting side point is that in 2009 the AFL had the highest attendances at their grand final out of all the sports codes in the world including the FA cup and the Super bowl.

Walruss to say that people play AFL only when they can’t play a Rugby code is a myopic view point born from within the last bastion of the NRL. You need to understand that for the greater part of Australia Rugby does not exist, except perhaps as a very minor niche sport. Crumbs even sons of ex Rugby League greats such as Keiren Jack now play AFL in preference of League. All I can say to you is enjoy it while you can, its days are numbered. :(

I think I’ll declare my innings there. I’d offer you another bat but I think the game is over.

Now for finger lets bring it back to the topic.

Can I invite you all to take the opportunity and come and view the spectacle that is AFL on your way to the Island next year. It may add an interesting cultural and sporting experience to your World Title vacation.

 How ya going AB, Steeno...anybody else out here 'cept for us minorities and the crickets.....
 Bugger me MJ, if you didn't take the bait, hook, line, sinker & fishing rod - I actually started my sporting life playing AFL but moved on to Ra Ra, then to League...so I really do appreciate all forms of football, even Soccer when played well, but best of all I love fishing
