Portugal !

Post by TC »

I will be going to Portugal in early April and would really love to surf there or even better kneeboard there. Does any one have any info on surf breaks near Lisbon and a place to rent, or borrow a board? I will be on a work junket so well I will bring my wet suit and fins but a board will not be possible. I would be appreciative of any help from our Euro kneelo’s or well traveled local boys. Cheers TC :D

TC

2O mins drive from Lisbon is playa Guincho, it's a lovely beach with quality surf, April is a good bet for sizable surf, but the water will be COLD
Pack a winter steamer, boots, gloves & hood, you may not need it all, but that will more than likely depend on the weather & windchill.

The water stays cold all summer despite very warm mid-summer (80 degree +) air temps, you'll need a 3/2 fullsuit, too cold for a shorty!!

If you head further north, you have a choice of many quality reefbreaks & points heading towards Ericeira (spelling) & beyond...

Have a look at the Stormrider Guide Europe or Wannasurf for more detail on spots to check out.

Portugal is a beautiful country with great waves, you're sure to score some good surf in April.

Can't help re: where to rent a KB, I'm not sure how much KBing is going on there, be good to know more about that.....anyone - ?

The Kneeboarder on the Portugal Team during the late 90's was Paulo Cunha. If I can find his email and/or phone number I'll PM you.

April a good 3/2 with no hood gloves or boots will be fine or it has been for me in the past. Ericiera is the place to stay. Its 1 hour norhte west of Lisbon and you can get the bus straight there. There are 6+ world class set ups in working distnce from the town it is honestly like the town at the end of the rainbow lefts , rights, slabs, pointbreaks it has it all.
If the wind is on shore in Ericiera take the 1-1 1/2 hour drive north to Peniche and catch supertubos for some deep, thick beach break pits. Apart from these places there are loads of other classic set ups up and down the coast. Get a map and go exploring.
I like Portugal

HIII GUYS

here iam the one and only Paulo cunha, lol

Still in action, hey David you should come here i check out our waves again, trust me they are better than any event we were in... Well, except for the ISA event in Carcavelos, thats my home break, lol.
I moved south to Arrifana between 2002 and 2008, just got back to Carcavelos again, the power here is amazing, but down in the Algarve, and mostly in Arrifana i remember the perfect lineups, big swells in the winter and almost no crowds
Kneeboard in Portugal in on a downtime, i quit competition the year the portuguese surfing federation dropped the national tour, so since 2003 we have only one event, The portuguese Cup, only 12-16 kneelos atending every year, in 2006 i return just to have fun with friends at that event and started to win again, i did consider going to the world Champs in Santa cruz, but with the divorce i lost a lot of cash so i coulnt make it, what a shame!!!
Lots of breaks near Lisbon, and quality ones, the crow is huge now, and there are highways to the best spots, so staying in lisbon you can access Peniche in 45 min, Ericeira in 30 min, Sintra 30 min, Guincho 20 min, Carcavelos 15 min, Costa da Caparica 25 min. Too easy.

Made me rather maudlin....I had a great time there a few years ago (apart from the sinus infection!) surfed Arrifana a few times and a place that was basically no beach just a rocky cove with a hairy take off, but nice waves.....

Must go back one day - its so close by plane!
all the best,

Scotty
