What is Spiral Vee?

What works & what doesn't and in what type of conditions. Got a "secret" only you and your shaper know???? Post it here... we can keep it quiet ;-)

Since Bruce doesn't seem to be around at the moment I'll give my view (based on my 5 Flashpoints (or is that 6?))

Spiral V is concaves on either side of the stringer, with the stringer higher than the rails (as in vee). The concaves are subtle - a couple of millimeters and start aft of knees and run between rail fins, flattening out under the tail fin (both vee and concave).

The spiral vee strips water from under the board in a directed manner, rather than water squashing out the sides like a typical vee bottom.

Because the concaves are subtle and blended into the rail line they don't have many of the hangups of channels (like "sticking" to the face in tube situations). The vee facilitates rail transitions.

And Red, you are on the money..you just gotta (politely) ask water, exactly what it is that you want it to do.

simple isn't it

And I thought that you got spiral vee when the laminator mixed up a particularly hot batch when he was glassing the bottom and the resin went off so hot it twisted the blank...........lol

Beeline
Now take that one step further and start a centered concave up in the nose or above the halfway point and split the concave into the V as it flows back.

This was a bottom shape taught to me by Mike Crotou (spelling?). He and Mark Angel went over to Hawaii ,1980s, and worked with Brewer for several years and this is one of his favorite bottom contours.

It is very possible that this bottom contour could have been developed from Terry or many other sources from Austrailia. Lots of tech. sharing was happening back then. This is where it came to me, no doubt the trail could be much longer. I still use it on all my boards, the trick is to keep it subtle your not trying to channel the flow just increasing the pressure a little bit.

mornin,

Not sure, but I believe that design [spiral vee]] came out of a melding of several different people in hawaii.fitz, brewer, maybe being the prime movers in the design.
Maybe somebody out there has a better memory?

cheers

Jon - I think Mike spells his last name Croteau. Man, what an animal...I'm sure we all have our wild stories about that guy. Like the time Patty burned him on a 6 foot day at 26 Avenue because he was out of control.

How far from the tail does the V normally extend up the board?

I first saw this bottom shape in 73 on some Brewer shapes on Kauai.
I've shaped them into many a board over the years and still do.

The V can start and stop as far as needed or wanted.

Wild stories about Croteau? Dont' get me started......

Like one time the beer and every other form of booze ran out in our Camp at G-Land. So Mike and crew head over to Bong Bong's camp to raid their store room. He picked up my mate Sean and used him as a battering ram to crash in the bamboo wall!
Things deteriorated to FUBAR as one can imagine..............

Another fun time was when he backed out of 3 macking 10' Sunset beauties in a row. Every wave I called him to GOGOGO! But he missed each one. I thought "screw him" and charged the next one.........and of course he drops in. As we head towards the inside bowl he faceplants right in front of me. I narrowly avoid his hurtling hulking mass and pull in. But still not free from his aura of mayhem because now his unleashed board is ghost riding just above and ahead of me. His eleven foot X 4' thick pintail barge is sucked up into the roof of the huge warbling cavern and nearly decapitates me when it breaks free. I exit the barrel with Noaha Budroe paddling on the shoulder straring wide eyed and mouth agape in disbeleif.
