Darcy - don't forget Bob Gove. This guy would probably surf Pipeline at night for the fun of it!

I would love to see Bob surfing North Shore. He would probably tear the place apart. But I didn't include him because somehow I can't see Bob wanting to deal with the scene, and North Shore isn't that much of an undiscovered frontier anymore. Even though it's not really all that crowded, but he does seem to go for the "off the beaten track" sites and solo outings at heavy mysto breaks. Of course, Bud has the inside scoop on all the heavy places to surf that no one ever talks about. I can see Bud and Bob grooving the same track and disappearing for a couple of days, only to return with big grins and no details other than it was triple overhead and perfect ...Darcy - don't forget Bob Gove. He should go, though, definitely.

It wouldn't be the first time!
Full moon surfs can be super fun here.
Most of the spots have been and still do get surfed at night.
I've not surfed Pipe at night myself, but I know people who have.
I have at Sunset with real size, Jocko's, Laniakea, Rocky Point, V-Land etc. many many times.
There are still a few "mysto" spots around here.
Very long (20-30 minute) paddles mostly.
February is the month to score them.
One is actually called Mysto's. But it's not really off the beaten path.
You can see it from the highway near Laniakea, if you know what your looking at. Doesn't even show until it's double over head, doesn't get good until it's triple overhead. Still can score it alone. Last time I surfed it I had to beg a friend to paddle out with me. He was scared but it was perfect 100 yard long rights that end in deep water. No wierd currents or rips to mess with. Just a flawless long fast peeling right reef break all by itself far from shore.
Maybe the place isn't much of an undiscovered frontier but it certainly can be an adventure when it's cranking.
After a week straight of big surf many spots get very uncrowded.
When its 10 + and your sitting WAY OUT side with just a couple other people,(like the session Russell Stott and I scored at Laniakea), you feel pretty alone and vunerable.
Didn't Bob go to Tahiti?
Wasn't that a bit of a scene?

Yes, Bob was there and it was a scene. He did his part for the team and then disappeared, quietly snuck off to remain undercover (and nicely slotted) at Teahupoo, pleasantly anonymous until the circus showed up in not one but three boatloads of reef hungry kneelos. Then went back to his wise ruminations over the reef after the rabid hoardes were reluctantly dragged away. Last seen sampling more local gems on Moorea, missing both the bad weather and unruly post-contest growling and hassling at the less than stellar beach break where the less fortunate of us were encamped. Bob's got it going on.Bud wrote:Didn't Bob go to Tahiti?

Mosman is a beautiful part of Sydney..spend a lot of time there one way or the other.
And yes, I played Rugby for many years. Won an undefeated premiership with Manly in my 20's.
One thing for sure..Rugby certainly kept you out of the water on weekends. Coaches wouldn't let you surf game day and the one after you just wanted to stay in bed.
I have great news..I have just spent some time with Gavin Colman who is one of the best big wave kneeboarders that I know. We spoke about the Gathering and we've spoken about boards.
Gavin is a VERY strong chance to attend and I will forward your email address to him over this weekend.
Too stoked

Hey Wayne,
Fantastic news to hear you will be going to the Hawaiian gathering if all goes OK. As far as Gavin goes, I'm not 100% sure but as per Bruce Hart's submission it sounds like he is. I'm waiting on a response from Bruce as I'm interested to know as I thought he gave the sport up. I hear he has been to a contest or 2 lately. Hopefully we are going to get a good turn up from the Australians to the gathering.
Anyway, keep in touch.
Simon

NS Kneeboard Gathering 2005
I was wondering if anyone is interested in sharing accommodations on the North Shore for the 2005 Gathering or if a group already headed that way and could use another person to help minimize housing/vehicle rental costs. I can make it any two weeks in February.
