Good surfers, stand or kneel, generate more speed out of a wave by utilizing the steepest and fastest sections. I think an AVERAGE kneelo is in a better postion to see and utilize these sections as opposed to an AVERAGE standup.Steenos wrote:we still dont go faster

speed
My two cents.
Got a 20 ft oregon dory, and I'm coming back home after a good days salmon fishing.hunkered down on a box seat-water is about a bit more than 3ft away.Seems like I'm screaming along.I radio a bud who pulls along side.I say, whats my speed,he says guess....20+
Nope.how about 12.
Present day:On a 300ft research vessel,on the bridge,42ft off the water-Chech the speed over ground meter,it says 15kts.lLooking at the water it seems we are barely moving.....
I agree with coach,it is an illusion, closer to the water, the more quicker it seems.

Then...
given convential reality is based on illusion
you know!!!
we say the sun sets and rises but in reality the sun does not move - we live the romantic illusion for the sake of sex and poetry
so therefore the point has been proven
being closer to the wave means the kneeboarders are faster
row row row your boat
gently down the stream
merrily merrily merrily merrily
life is just a dream - or an illusion
but its best to make that illusion worthwhile
stay happy

phew...end of forum topic
life is not an illusion
you want to place some philosophical meat behind that one?
Given perception differs with every individual and reality is based on perception it can be said there is an illusionary quality to ones existential reality - this does not deny existance but it changes the nature of holding to a concrete theory of how things are.
From moment to moment every atomic structure changes - all mental conceptions - all physical phenomena - what was here this morning is quite different to whats here now
Ive been listening to some of the lyrics on The Sparrow has landed and friends. From the Christian perspective some of these songs allude to the illusion some dwell in until the "find God" Then the illusion is cleared
Now im a Buddhist so i appreciate the spiritual nature of the lyrics if i do not fully concur with the methods - but all perceptions are different and people enjoy different tastes
or from a pure scientific view "its all realative"
Im surprised people feel the need to put some posts/threads to bed as if their perception is final - ive found some of the digressions quite interesting!
If you dont like a thread, dont click on - like a book - dont read it!

dreams
Drifting into midnight
I keep returning to a dream..
From what they call reality,
To what I'd have it seem..
For I know the real illusion,
Lay somewhere inbetween

Life (and surfing) is as fast as you choose to make it

Beeline wrote: "actually your average kneelo has substandard skills compared to your average standup."
I totally disagree. What research do you base this statement on? Have you measured this in any type of scientific fashion?
I believe the average kneelo actually has far superior skills to the average standup.
Most standups are just following a fad or have been sucked in by the trendy and fashionable.
Most kneelos, on the other hand, are truly dedicated and much more in tune with their equipment, the ocean, and the waves.
I agree, somewhat, that "kneeboarding is easy to learn" (the question is, in comparison to what?), but having also been a standup surfer myself it is not as easy as many would have you believe.
What it definitely is easier to do as a kneelo, however, is to advance and progress, pushing into ever more difficult and critical situations.
So in effect, this means that when comparing a kneelo and a standup with the same amount of time spent surfing, the kneelo will actually be advanced over the standup, not "substandard".
"If we go fast (edited) its through 'No Stall' surfing which 'not many'
kneeboarders can do."
Please explain this last statement, as it makes absolutey no sense whatsoever!

You dont have to be nice to me, but you may have to accept that I do have an opinion, if you like it or not. I also read the paper and also have beliefs.
The only philosophical meat needed is, I accept your beliefs so please accept mine. To say what you just said, is as narrow as what I said. I was not forcing you to stop, nor believe me. But to me for this topic, there is an obvious answer that does not need to go into atomic structure changing from minute to minute. I feel you may have got your back up for no reason.
If I like to read what other people write and state what I think, I will, and so can you. Maybe I dont read things as deeply as you, maybe I dont need to. Maybe I read other things in a philosophical way, maybe I dont. Would it make me a better person or just more philosophical?
By the way Dorje, I like reading your posts. Lets keep it that way.

Hey Mr Jackson
you make a good point about kneeboarders knowing their stuff - i have been of the opinion that kneeboarding is harder to master than standuping and i think what you suggest supports that from the perspective that we all put what seems alot more into understanding kneeboarding than maybe others do with their style of riding - i dont know many - if any - standups who bolocks on about it as much as we do
Dearest Headwax esq
an incredibly humble, gently spoken, small in stature Buddhist Lama from the Himalaya travelled to Tibet in 1987 and rallied the population of Lhasa into mass demonstrations against the Chinese presence - and you would be aware i think, how the Chinese military cope with such things
another simillar dispositioned (outwardly at least) Tibetan Lama laughed heartly and told me how kind I was for causing a Nepalese cook working in the Indian Himalaya to fall to ground quite heavily.
The cook was practicing his kungfu movie shadow fighting moves on me when i had my hands full - i stuck out a leg cos i was not sure what he was going to do and he tripped and went arse over head - not a good look for face saving Asian sensability - I was horrified - Geshe Tsring (the Tibetan Lama) just laughed knowing that the kid had learnt a lesson regarding the bullshite of worshipping kungfu street fighting movies
tough love!
I mentioned I think in reponse to a Beeline post that I agreed with Steenos
about the speed issue - after all hes a Parkes man - however 1600 views and 50 plus posts give the thread a life of its own so let it fade like a cloud when the wind dedcides to blow in of itself - dont wish for it.

ps and then wax, theres your "Im happy you disagree with me statement to ...who was it ....Albert? ...classic! ....better to argue in love than divorce

Hey Steen
I like opinions and pretty much agree with all of yours
but i also like knowing what forms opinions (the meat)
I love talking about politics, death and religion
and of course kneeboarding - interior design grabs me too!
and i love the fact that atomic particles change from moment to moment and will hang that on a hook not to high brow but to see if another will run with it too - so sorry if it seemed aloof
generally just looking for others to shoot the breeze with
have not had a decent surf in 6 weeks - you understand
John
