looking for wood keel fins

Post by sharkbait »

Hello fellow anomalies,
Sharkbait here- first post, glad to find this site! I'm getting a new old fish shaped, and I'm looking for a source for marine ply keel fins. So far I've found Paul Jensen's very nice 9" by 5" fins. Any of you use them? Whaddaya think? The fins on my dying John Mel are slightly smaller, 4 by 7 or so, would love to dial in close copies...who builds such things these worrisome days?
Thanks a bunch!

I'm betting John at Freeline still has the template for his Fish keel fins.....never throw away a template. And I'm betting Rainbow Fins has a keel fin template and would be able to cut you a set.

Contact The Green Room surfshop in OB San Diego. Tell them you are looking for "Geppy" keel fins. They should be able to set you up with what you are looking for.

I have shaped a couple of sets of 9 x 5" ply keels,(not to mention hundreds of glass fins) one for a lis style kneeboard and one for a standup fish. Made from 12mm birch plywood, which is lighter and has thinner laminations than marine ply(as they are totally sheathed, there is no need for marine ply), they worked great in the kneeboard (standup not finished yet), you can see pics in the photo section, they are similar to Paul Jensens keels. If you can't find any locally send me a mail and I will foil you some f.o.c, as they weigh little, i am sure the postage to you will be negligible. Good luck with your search. :D
Cheers
Mark

The current Lis fish fins made made by Gephart are 5 by 9 but the trailing edge is swept back to 7 inch at bottom(very manuverable but still tons of drive) I will post a pic. They are not the old straight backs from the seventies.
