SHARK ATTACK

Post by Steven Lewis »

Just be glad it wasnt your time, it doesnt seem to be a nice way to go but I think if the shark was going to attack, you would have never saw it coming, take a look at the miscellaneous pics I ran into a old attack on a kneeboarder 1981.

CD,

like many places around the world,we live with them [sharks].We live in the red triangle[ano neuavo to the farallone islands to the mouth of tomales bay.
I'm involved in an ongoing white shark project at the farallones. So I'm well aware of whats going on.There are at least 500 photos of attacks on various marine mammals-some didn't make it-others got lucky
There are at least afew dozen incidents a year where sharks have chased or influenced surfers to leave the water.
People up here are aware of their surrounding, and what is in the water, sometimes there are signs, and that sixth sense kicks in,and it's time to get out.I surf alone, quite a bit,or with one ot two others, and am constantly watching.
A good friend got bit up here last fall,Knawed on his calf and heel.he wacked it on the snout and it let go.He's fine, and we surf the same breaks still.
Think one of the surf rags did an interview.
Most of the attacks are non fatal. They have atendency to bite and then back off to let the animals bleed to death.Large mammals have very large canines and can an will bite the shark where it's most vulnerable, around the eyes.
After looking at [high hundreds]of shark pics, white scars around the face and gill area were noted. It was finally realized they were mammal teeth marks-why the shark bires and backs off.
Now tigers are another deal altogether.
Hopefully haven't put too many asleep

cheers

I'd definately get sweary seeing that, till I realized it was a dolphin[bottlenose]The fin is falcate, like a surfboard fin.Whiteys rear portion dorsal is vertical, straight up and down.the tail is twisted to conform to the wave, sharks,''most''fishes tails are vertical, mammals are horizional.
The upper surface, dorsal back etc.is closer to the wave face than the ventral area.
Whitey has a large pectoral fin, closely aligned with the dorsal fin.dolphins pecs are way forward.
Thats enough....Like I said,we pay attention to detail....It helps

cheers :)

I'm not sure longlining has impacted much on white shark stocks, longliners operate well off the continental shelf and I believe that whites are mainly an inshore species which don't rely heavily on swordfish or large tunas.

On the other hand our fur seal populations are increasing (seals were greatly reduced by sealing in the early 1800s). White sharks have been protected for several years now and it's possible this and the improving seal populations might be contributing to an increase in their numbers and perhaps the apparent increase in incidents.

For these interested in a surfing trip to southern Australia it is probably best not to review the maps of satellite tracked sharks by our national marine research agency.

SB,
good site..gotta love that bomber,a mover for sure. They are all males which is interesting, makes me wonder where the females are.
Our mammal numbers here are at historical numbers, and whitey is a protected species.Increase the food supply and.....
There is an increase in predation on inshore coastal fisheries.Mostly on salmon and halibut. smaller sharks[8-12ft] seem to be more opportunistic, eating fish as well as small mammals. After asize 12 on up they pretty much rely on big things with more blubber.
An interesting fish for sure.

cheers

A British surfer was attacked yesterday at Noordhoek Beach in Cape Town SA.

He was not seriously injured but had lacerations to his leg and foot.

Searching the conditions for next week in Europe ( Really good waves coming 3 - 4 metres) I have met this article. I do not know if you will agree with him, I really have not experiences with sharks. they are not comun in this area.
Sometimes is more the fear they provoke than the real danger they suppose.

Mornin all

An excellent article, written from, not gathered info, but from first hand information over years of sufing and diving experience.
Make special note about diving-surfing around groups of mammals,in areas of known white shark activity.
