A New Birth To The KSUSA Family: The Perfect Spoon

Post by Scott »

A number of you out there have been giving the classic flex spoon a fresh look. Man 0' War has just finished an absolute gem. Check out the "Boards" section of this site's photogallery, or the link is below:

I'll try and get him to leave a more detailed post of his initial test drives. I was wowed by his description and it is best told by him.

Thanks for the compliments, and thanks, Scott, for posting the pics. Sometimes pictures are better than the reality but not this time. As beautiful they are, the real thing is better. These boards are amazing in the way they look, the way they feel, and the way they work. I walk out and hold mine every day. I want to put it in the car and drive it around with me. I'm about this far from bringing it to bed with me.

I owe an unpayable debt of gratitude to Dale Solomonson (Flexman). He is so knowledgeable, so generous and so accessible. I don't know whether people dedicate boards to people, but to me this one will always be "D-lo."

It's only home-made and has its little warbles and imperfections. What would happen if Bruce, Buddy and the pros started building these?!! Who will step up?

NorCal guys, after I take it to our FL Gathering where Eric and Co. can test it, I'm hoping to bring it out with me to the Bay Area June 9 for a week. It's not coming back with me. Scott W is the new owner. I'm sure he'll share with the ksusa family. But responsibly, Scott, this is addictive. Leaving aside all the other beautiful characteristics--the transparency, the liveliness, the duckdiving ease, the lack of leash--there's that banking/slingshot feeling. It's different than the pivoting and sliding you're probably used to. Think of a bobsled run with its ecstasies but also it's limitations. I like the way Jon said it recently: "They rip for those patient enough to open up their options of the line of attack and rhythm of maneuvers. It is a different dance with a different tempo."

The cost in materials was about $300. You could probably also subtract the $75 for the blank, which was saved by this way of doing it. Actually, in view of what you get in return, it costs nothing. As far as hours, I remember Paul Gross saying he put in about 100 per board. I think that was about right for me too.

If you want to contact me for details or see more pics from every angle (Scott posted 7 out of about 30), it would be better to email me than PM me. mrpalwessling@bellsouth.net

Peace to all.

Oh my! I might get to try a spoon and with no cord, count me in. Can I get a reservation on this?

I feel a little bit like Timothy Leary here. Jon, we're going to have a good time. Just pray for surf.

Then you need to get on Jon Manss. I'm leaving it with Scott W and him. Jon's reproductive powers are stunning, even at his age.
