i think it basically comes down to craftsmanship.i'm a carpenter by trade and if you gave me the plans to build you a structure,i could do it.same goes for a shaper.i think more often than not ,people ordering their boards aren't able to acurately describe what they want.
if you leave your old board with any shaper worth his salt, and asked for a copy of it.he could make you a new one as identicle as two handmade items could be.
wayne hutch lived by shaping surfboards, with a stable of hot surfers in his team.(i doubt making kneeboards puts food in mouths)which i guess is the reverse of this topic

i recently sent three boards to be glassed by an old schoolfriend.this guy is considered one of the best young surfboard shapers in the world at the moment and is currently under contract and does a little backyard stuff on the sly.i said to him that if my shapes looked a little rough to feel free to clean em up a bit.HOLY SHIAT!!
he took this as a green light to tweek my fin placements!by inches!
after i spewed at him and calmed down he pointed out that he thought
that my fins were to far forward.
i've since repositioned the fins and all is well.
so yeah i think surfboard shapers can be capable of making a good kneeboard,as long as you dont leave them up to their own devices and dont put them in a position where they are guessing stuff.
having said all that i would still go to a reputable kneeboard shaper for my boards purely because they put the time and research into our chosen medium, have teams of hot kneeboarders to get feedback from and deserve to make a living out of it!(but probably dont)

From my personal experiences, it didn't matter much if the shaper was a footie or knee-specific. What mattered most is if he had EXPERIENCE.

I've personally rode some great knee machines that were shaped by standup guys like Hollingsworth, McNabb and Preisendorfer.

However, I've also had the mispleasure of riding a 5'6" double winger pintail tri-fin shaped by Lis (before Simon invented the Thruster). Every Lis board I've ever owned was MAGIC, except for this board. I just couldn't get it to work for me.....

ALSO... I had a good friend that had a magic board...it was a 5'10" double winger standup fish shaped by Lis. It looked almost exactly like a KaneGarden Garibaldi. He swore by this board for years, and rode it 'til it was yellow and swollen.

As far as shaping, I believe that all shapers---standup or kneelo---have certain niches. Experimentation with new shapes, etc. doesn't always equate to MAGIC without lots-n-lots of practice. So, stick with the experts.

i do agree wax

but is not the feel in the knees of the rider

if snap is happy then......who are we.....a good board is after all....

and then theres the smith boy to consider!

i myself would spend the extra bucks on a shaper of repute (nag ampo) ...thats why i ended up with the board i did ...waited and did not go the cheap option (albeit second hand option) hey a good used car can be a good buy no! just ask me

anyway snap might have hit on a winner...maybe it was luck

but really im posting more just to say gday :D

SOME OF MY BEST STICK'S EVER WERE SHAPED BY NONE KB'ERS.
WHAT MAKES THE MAGIC BOARD IS A SHAPER STOP/ CRAFTSMAN
WHO LISTENS AND TAKES WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY AND HAS THE
((( ABILITY ))) TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

I SPENT OVER 3 HRS. 17 YRS AGO WITH (( BILL STEWART)) ONE OF THE BEST LONGBOARD SHAPERS EVER IN THE SHAPING ROOM TALKING/SHAPING/TALKING/SHAPING. TILL I WAS HAPPY WITH THE FINAL PRODUCT.

NOW 28 YRS LATER THE GUY THAT GOT THIS OLD FART INTO KNEERIDING WAY BACK WHEN OWN'S ( BIOHAZARD SURFBOARDS.COM ). JOHN WAS A GREAT KB'ER AND WAS MY INSPERATION ALONG WITH MY NOW BROTHER INLAW DAVE GARCIA. EVEN BACK THEN THEY WERE STRUGGLING WITH SHAPERS. REASON BEING THERE SURFING WAS ADVANCING FASTER THAN THE BOARDS WERE.

NOW JOHN AND I HAVE HOOKED UP TO START THE MIKE GARRETT MODLE( BIOHAZARD) LINE OF KNEEBAORDS FOR ALL THE REASONS THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT. I WANT FULL INPUT FROM THE BUYER START TO FINISH. AND EVERY BOARD TO BE MAGIC

"" REMEMBER"" MAGIC IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THE PERSON DOING THE TRICK'S :P

JUST MY THOUGHT " THESE COMMENTS ARE NOT THE EXPRESSED OPINIONS OF KSUSA.ORG.

KEEP IT LEGAL !!!! :D

JUST RIP IT !!!!!!

one thing to appreciate is that everybody from a school teacher to a shaper to banker to a clothes maker to a plumber to a gardener can have a period when things dont work as well as a time previous

perhaps they were trying something new or were jaded or distracted by kids, getting older or an unrequited love whatever

to say that every product has to be perfect is to think your a machine ... human frailty.. is a beautiful thing full of learning

not every kid has got my best and i dont expect every shaper pumps out absolute winner after winner

a board that did not work shaped by whoever, is not such a bad thing...anyway another surfer could jump on it and think it was gold

in my class what works for one kid does not always work for the next...but we have talked about the individuality of all before ...so nothin new eh

As Parksey said when I mocked him, a shaper, for riding an old battered board, "It's the best boards I've ever had. I can't reproduce it." The blank's are different, the glassing varies - everything contributes to the end result.
