NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A surfer dangling his feet into the Atlantic Ocean on Florida’s east coast was bitten by a shark, authorities said.
The 18-year-old man was surfing in water up to 8 feet deep near the New Smyrna Beach jetty Saturday when the shark swam up and bit him, said Scott Petersohn, spokesman for the Volusia County Beach Patrol.
“This was a case of mistaken identity,” Petersohn told the Daytona Beach News-Journal. “The guy’s foot dangling in the water looks a lot like a fish.”
The man, who was not identified, suffered puncture wounds on his right foot, Petersohn said. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance in stable condition, officials said.
The size of the shark was not known.
The incident was the second confirmed shark bite off a beach in this county in less than a month, authorities said. A 15-year-old boy suffered minor injuries when he stepped on a shark Oct. 15 at the Ponce Inlet jetty.

Stayed in bed this morning:
The Peninsula is accross the channel from Phillip Island.
There are a few sharks (including up to 4 GWs) around because the seals are pupping. I guess he's lucky it was a little reefy or something investigating whether he was edible (and deciding he wasn't)
Mornington Peninsula shark attack 'first in 7 years'
Life Saving Victoria says a shark attack off the Mornington Peninsula is the state's first for at least seven years.
Tom Burke, 18, escaped serious injury in the attack off Flinders Beach about 6:00pm AEDT last night.
He was dragged from his surfboard and had his leg bitten by a 1.5 metre shark.
He was taken to hospital and released a short time later.
Mr Burke says surfers are aware that the area is a shark breeding ground, and it is up to individuals to assess the risk of using an unpatrolled beach.
Life Saving Victoria's Chris Stevens says the Western Port area is a shark breeding ground, but swimmers and surfers should not be unduly alarmed.
"It is a known area for sharks, but for shark-attacks, we don't have records that say that they are common in that area," he said.
