Svein,
You mentioned your an Cowries expat., is that Shellharbour N.S.W., Cowries your talking about. I lived in Wollongong street from about '76 on and off and now ay Warilla. Cowries adorned the lounge room window at Shellharbour before the old man sold the property in the early 90's. Maybe we know each other if not by name by decription. PM me if you want, maybe a catch up.

i'm keen to fellas,
factors to be considered
.i have been known to spend a month or so camping at treach at this time of the year(jan) and its always packed out as is bulls paddock.no doubt you newie blokes have had similar experiences.
thats no reason to stay away, but if blokes like red are going to make the effort to come from a long distance,it'd suck if they were turned away .so book early people
location wise there are two other spots if bulls paddock is to packed.here's some imfo for those not familiar with the area.
bulls paddock- faces predominant swell/wind and has minimal shade and the campsite faces west(very hot in the arvo).theres a good chance of having to drive to surf.probably the cheapest.amenities are average.heaps of young crew stay here.

Celito-offshore in the nor easter.pockets of good camping spots.golf course in walking distance.about the same distance from the rec club as bulls paddock.good chance of not having to drive to waves.good amenities.good blend of old/young crew.

treachery-clean in the nor easter, takes swell from any direction.sticks out further than anywhere else(most consistent) and the crowds are more regulated due to acsess being difficult(not impossible)for people not staying at the campground.
this ones the furthest from the rec club.and is probably the most expensive(you get what you pay for eh?)good amenities.old/young crew.

actually two years ago about 8 female uni student/surfers camped right next to us.i discreetly glanced over at them from time to time :P .my mate however does not have the same skills and basically sat there with his beer with his sunnies on practically burning holes in them with his eyes
i started to get concerned when he was able to tell me which ones were drinking more than others or how many showers each one had been for(creepy i know but you'll like the ending)
suprisingly the ladies were onto this creepy behaviour and after a few liquid soothers one night they approached our campsite and verbally shamed our favourite pervert.
he left the next day.
horibble for him, liberating for his victims and piss funny for us  .

oh and bring a wetty if you feel the cold.i havent worn a wetty for 3 weeks ,but nor east current creates upwelling up there and its most unpleasantly cold at times.you'll be cutting glass with your nipples :Pif the nor easter howls for a day or two.

thats what I figure too Damo, hopefully the peak crowds will be thinning out by then. The Bull Paddock(Booti Booti) is just a cruisey place to hang out in summer because of the direct beach access for a swim and quality surf can be on your door step(no car needed) or not far away.

Hope to see you all there Jan 20/21/22

The Hole

Post by Svein »

No Damo...not The Hole in Newcastle (although that's a nice one too). The Cowries I meant is right off the boat harbour in Shellharbour. Us kneelos had a great time there by our few selves, until the boards got short enough to handle the steep takeoffs.

That reminds me...there was a reef offshore and to the south of Cowries that used to break only on the biggest cyclone driven swells. I never did see anyone ride that back then, but I wonder if anyone knows if it's been ridden?
